"I have magic, but I'm not sure it's really divine. I must confess I could tell you were lying when we first met, so I lied too. I kind of tune in to places I go, so maybe there is a connection to your gods, but I'm not really sure. I am an American, but I've been to a few worlds where there are different America's so I'm not sure that helps tell you where I'm from."

The statement about have magic but not being divine turns out to be a very convoluted statement to say in their language. The priest seems mildly put off by it, but listens to the rest of what he has to say anyways.

"So you've been to more worlds than just the two?"

"I wasn't lying when we met. I just wasn't telling the whole story. What did you tell the Americans we put you with?"

"The breaking... You, at least, have seen the sky. Eight months ago, the sky was blue, the sun shone, maps worked, and the great, wise and clever Ink-Thur visited us at least once a month. Now, the sky is gears, the earth is many shifting pieces of land, and no one has heard from the Gods since. We have averted famine, but we must do more than that if we are to survive."

"If I find your dog, can you give me an omen more significant than what he ate for dinner? And can you contact Ink-Thur? Or Kal-Mor?"

"Yeah, I've been to a bunch of worlds now."

"I told them you guys were interested in me because I had some magic, and I told them about the crazy sky... they seemed really surprised.

If I do this though, I wanna be treated as your honored ambassador to my world or the gods or whatever, and not a prisoner. If you teach me how you guys do your magic, it might help me 'tune in' to the powers here and improve my reception."

Do I have your word that as long as you are given an escort to where ever in the city you need to go, are fed properly, have the ability to send messages, and access to your dog, you will not attempt to escape, you will answer questions freely, and will fulfill theological requests?"

I can give you book of rituals... but I will not ordain you unless you are willing to commit to the ordination... and I suspect you are not. I would ask you not to offend any Gods... but I suppose offense would at least tell us something. Go ahead and bring down their wrath if you can."

Peter comes to the realization that asking about Goliath was a mistake. He's given the priest leverage.

"What kind of 'theological requests' are we talkin' about? and for how long? You want me to promise to stay your prisoner forever? I can promise not to run away from your escort, but I'm not willing to accept that my freedom is just over and promise to never leave. "

Peter decides that maybe he can haggle. "Can we make a trade? If I come up with something useful for you, it buys my freedom? "

"The question of timing is a good one, I suppose I should ask when you wish to leave and where you would leave to. We certainly wouldn't like to guarantee you a living for the rest of your life either. You have disavowed association with the local americans... would you go there, or elsewhere?"


"I suppose that is a fair deal: if you improve our communication with our Gods, or our understanding of where they have gone, then you have earned your freedom... with perhaps a few assurances you will not work with our enemies. We may wish to employ you further at that point... but we can negotiate an actual position for you in that case, yes? If you cannot... we can negotiate again at that point"


"I must approve all of this with my superiors, of course, but we can set you looking for your Dog. What resources and time do you think you will need?"
