The portal is in the woods and the clothesline is in people's back yards...

Peter is more careful on his second approach, and spots a different soldier. The man is watching in the direction of the portal.

Peter will head toward the houses and find himself something to wear before returning and trying to evade the soldiers and check out the portal.

Do the houses seem occupied? Are the cars in the driveways? Trying to determine if there has been an evacuation...

There does not appear to have been an evacuation.

sneaking along fencelines, Peter is able to find a set of clothing for himself: he has the choice between T-shirts sporting vacation destinations (I "heart" NYC, ect) and dress shirts. They're all just a touch large, but not too much.

He does indeed. If he is spotted again, he will talk to them this time and see what they have to say about what's going on around here.

Rolling again... 12 vs 11... failure by one... but the soldier fails by more.

Peter sneaks past a soldier who seems to be in a sort of trance, and is able to make it to the portal.

Peter can feel energy rushing out of the portal from the world with the clockwork sky. He can see the clockwork sky through the portal, as well as a charred field.

Peter looks for what he can see around the portal on either side before startling the dazed soldier with a firm...

He spots a squad of four soldiers watching the portal directly, so he can't go through without being seen by them. He can look at a few angles on the portal, and it seems that there is just an open field on the other side, with a farmhouse maybe a quarter mile away. He does notice hoof-prints and footprints having gone through the portal in both directions.

The soldier turns around, grasping his gun. "Yes Sir!"

He takes in who is actually talking to him. "Hey, this is a dangerous area! get out!"
