The Good, The Bad, and the Munchkin

As I have been searching for a good price on this version of Munchkin, I've typically seen two different boxes. One box appears to be quite faded in color (like it's been exposed to sunlight or store light way too long). The other one looks more in-line with other Munchkin boxes because the color of the box looks better. (I've also seen similar examples of this searching Amazon.com.) I've looked for the printing/published text on the bottoms of these boxes, and I wasn't able to tell what "version" they were. Any insights from the community on this one?

You could figure out the comparative age by comparing the Printing number and publishing date. You will usually see something like "1st Edition, 3rd Printing" followed by the publishing date on the base of the box near the barcode.

Hmm, but rereading, I notice you say you did look for this text... It should be there somewhere... But if you're saying you saw that text, then you have the right thing. All sets from the same Printing should be identical in terms of contents.

If I am at my local store within the next week or so, I will look again and maybe post a photo if I can't determine what version it is.

So I went to my local game store, and neither box had any of the normal version info printed on the sides/bottom where I'd usually expect it to be. The bar code was printed on the back bottom right hand corner with the ISBN numbers/bar codes and "SJG 1454", but nothing about editions/printings/versions. I'm assuming that even though the box colors appear different, they are the same version?

I hope this does not count as hi-jacking a thread but I have a similar difficulty with Munchkin Fu and Munchkin Impossible that I'd like to resolve. I've recently acquired two of each set from an extensive trawl of outlets in England's backwaters and wilderness. Three of the boxes are still sealed in their plastic wrap and I'm loath to open them without knowing which edition they are. I recall a statement somewhere that you can tell the version from a date printed somewhere on the box cover. However looking carefully has not revealed such a date. (I did find it near the bar code on a set of Monky Business so this possibly isn't a case of selective blindness.)

(The unwrapped box has no date I can spot either but from the cards within it must be from one of the first three printings.)

Re: The Good, The Bad, and the Munchkin

I searched online to see if there were any other board game stores near where I live, and lo and behold, I found a small shop about 20 minutes north of me. They had "The Good, The Bad, and The Munchkin", and it had the edition information at the bottom like I've seen other base sets have. It says it's the 1st edition, 4th printing, published in July 2012. Best of all, they had it for $19.99, so I bought it and the "Beating a Dead Horse" expansion. The card backs on the expansion are a bit lighter in color, but that is ok. I found what I was looking for, and I saved some money. :-)

We didn't print the date until a few years ago. Sets so old that they don't have a date on them have rules that are incompatible with current Munchkin releases.

Thanks for the info, Andrew! I'm now even more pleased that I was able to find the version that I did!

Can anyone post a picture of the card: Horse With No Name?

Plz,

Absolutely not. That would be a blatant violation of SJ Games' copyright. Please do not make such a request again.
