[OCC] Lost in Dreams

Lost in Dreams

You don't know why it happens. But eventually, it always does, and you end up naked, lost, and amid the craziest situations. You must use your wits to make do where ever you may end up, lost across the worlds.

This is a one character campaign, focusing on a world jumper who cannot control his ability. The ability in question is as follows:

Jumper (world, New worlds +50%, Naked -30%, Uncontrollable -10%, Unconscious only -20%, skill roll is dreaming, only when sleeping -20%, requires Immediate Preparation 1 hour -75%, cosmic +50%, Drift -15%) [30]

The game emphasis will be on roleplaying and exploration, as the dreamer is carried by the whims of fate across various worlds. Survival will be an issue, but its more about adapting to the new situation. As a general rule the world won't switch until the current situation is over. The character will be from our world (or a close parallel), at TL 8. He doesn't start with any supernatural advantages selected by the player (but actually has a suite of "base" advantages).

The character should start out with a fairly plausible back story, and background. No hard bitten survivalists please. I'll balk at anything more "well suited" than a surgeon who happens to be a old-fashioned gunsmith and loves to hunt (I actually know one, so thats why the line is there). The character will progress fairly rapidly, and we can have some good fun as skills are picked up from world to world. All sorts of worlds be visited, from high fantasy to Steam Punk to prehistoric survival to Nazi victory to robot apocalypse.

build the character on 100 points. The disad limit is "make him fun". Emphasis should be placed on well rounded attributes and good social advantages: you'll need to make a LOT of friends. an additional 10 points may be spent on "Flavor skills", things that are completely random and probably won't be useful, and certainly not on most worlds. For example, clerical investment, game (football), connisuer (wine), or security clearance.

Social and Financial advantages are at 40% normal cost. They will only reflect bearing, attitude, and background: it will be harder to pass yourself off as a somebody if you naturally have low status, and wealth will be something a prerequisite for things like merchant.

cinematic skills aren't available except in play.

The following advantages are free:
  • Luck (Game time) [15],
  • Serendipidy [15],
  • Jumper [30],
  • Magery 0 [5],
  • Talent 1 (gizmo power)[5],
  • Detect (supernatural phenomenon) [20]

please note the character is unaware of these, and can only improve these abilities in play or with earned points. I in fact give no guarantee on what magic systems will be seen.

The following disadvantages are already taken:
  • Weirdness Magnet[-15]
  • Dead Broke (Only after jumps -40%)[-15]

You will be able to improve the you jumper by removing Unconscious Only, drifting, then naked, and you will be able to add some abilities as well. Uncontrollable, preparation, and only when sleeping are permanently part of the ability (and plot).

Interested, and creating a character.

New Worlds is a +50% enhancement, making the Jumper ability 30 pts.

So, to clarify the character is built on 100 pts, + 10 pts for random flavor skills, and you add the 60 point package of advantages and disadvantages on top, making the character total at 170, correct?

Correct. Thanks for catching new worlds error. I'm looking forward to seeing the character.

Others keep submitting though... I may be able to run multiple versions of this (different worlds, so not really multiple versions...)

I am also interested. would you be fine with the following?

Jack of all trades talent

Artifact Lore (DF 11 p.17) and maybe a variation of this for places?

Improvisation (DF 11 p.17)

this is mostly cause when I heard world hopping and the places I might end up my first thought was "I want to make someone like DR. WHO" :D

I don't have access to DF and I don't think I have access to "jack of all trades talent". could you explain the gist of each?

Artifact Lore sounds like something you'd pick up through game play, not at the beginning though. We're starting with the first jump, when the jumper knows nothing about the worlds beyond his own--- including magic, psi, ect.

Re: [OCC] Lost in Dreams

Okay, I'm finished with my prototype of the character. I'll probably refine it later today, and post it either tonight or tomorrow.

Before I get around to writing up the whole character sheet, I figure I should ask if you have GCS (Gurps Character Sheet, awesome little utility for making characters).

Character is pretty loosely based off of a friend of mine. Built with a high IQ, musical skills, engineering skills, lots of low level miscellaneous science skills, a little bit of martial arts, plus some utility skills that I added in to give him some survival ability :P

Okay, might be a bit late (er) on getting the character up.

Only had a sore throat yesterday, and now I'm all the way to head-full-of-cotton-balls flu-ness.

I'll aim to have it up whenever I feel not-crappy, sorry about that.

(In the mean time, I'm sending you the rough version by pm. There was no way I was going to write the sheet out, so I am in fact sending a picture of a character sheet -_-)

Welcome Bartholomew!

I hope to see the final version of the other character soon!

The IC for Bartholomew will probably go up tonight, right after I roll some dice.

Once character gets a high TL, the other gets a low. I know which one will do better where.... but that has nothing to do with it. we're using dice.

Hey I'm interested in joining, do you still have time to run another one?

And a quick question about the setting, will the characters sometimes return to their homeworld?

I'm thinking of an artist by the way.

Elijah was born in Chicago to a Caucasian father and a Japanese mother. Intellectually gifted and musically talented, he was pressured to do well from a young age. He did exceedingly well in all of his studies, and found a job as an aerospace engineer when he left college. He likes metal songs (and playing them on the piano), science fiction, and roleplaying games. (I thought about writing the background in great detail, but since the character is based on a friend, it felt really creepy.)

I don't think these will be too hard to run. Go ahead and submit a character.

The characters will return to their homeworld. As they jump to more and more worlds they'll get more and more control over their abilities, including the ability to return.

The artist sounds like an interesting idea. I'd like to see it.

Elijah's in character is up.

Since Elijah is speaking to cavemen, and Bartholomew appears to be speaking to Martians (human Martians, but still), I can only conclude that we were actually kidnapped in a TARDIS and transported to random worlds.

The Doctor has clearly turned evil.

It's a good show. People that travel in the TARDIS are given the ability to understand pretty much any language (a fairly transparent plot device, but effective), which was the basis for my original comment :P

believe it or not, modern society can be pretty hostile.

I debated long and hard putting language talent on the list of automatic traits, but I decided I wanted to be able to have you speak broken forms of languages.

And yeah, gesture is a probably a great skill for the ride.

Luck is once a day.

Serendipity makes me give you lucky breaks, and its fairly informal. You can request specific happenings, in which case the "lucky breaks"are off for two "plot events": meeting notable people or changing things up: The other two are on there third each (jumping definitely counts).

EDIT: Actually, Elijah is on his fourth plot event: Jumping, Surviving (or trying to survive) in the woods, Meeting Stone and Quick Foot, Meeting with Shaman and Slays Beasts. Bart is on his Third: Jumping, Befriending Grekney, and trying to become the cook. Ironically, It seems each one takes about 20 posts, which is how many I display on a page.

I think this roll is one worth making a big fuss about. You'll have a -3 familiarity penalty, and while the food is of very poor quality, you really are simply trying to beat 'Ole mash makers standard, so quality won't hurt. You don't know what your goal is though.

So the moral of the story is that when Elijah is in immediate danger of getting sliced open, he gets much better at killing things.

Huh. That almost makes sense.

Re: [OCC] Lost in Dreams

And now the wild power talent comes into play:

Once in the campaign, you can point and say "I want that". You then have that power for the duration. So yes, zonxs, you turn out to have "jedi" powers. You can also choose to save it for later. The supernatural will pervade this campaign. If you are ever tested for a power, you will have to decide then and there whether or not you have it.

Bart is stuck on the mind set of being a jedi, though all he really wants to do is force choke, throw, and fly. Yes he thinks jedi's can fly. :D

Elijah and the fire mountain is similar to Frodo and Mordor, in that neither knew the way.

Elijah would be happy to run off as soon as he knows which direction it's in :P

but frodo wanted to put something in, and Elijah wants to take something out.

This is very true... Although I did say that they were similar in that way, and didn't specify if they were or were not similar in other ways :P

Frodo, for instance, is a Hobbit, and Elijah is not :P

Re: [OCC] Lost in Dreams

You'll have to have him find a way. He's seen it in his dreams, it can't be too far away, and lots of people know where it is.

Also, both frodo and Elijah are named Elijah

Ok as I mentioned to ericthered I want to join up for a game.
This is my first draft.

Edmund Pierce is a solid looking man in his early 40-s. From a young age his fantasy has been captured by history books. To his fathers chagrin he pursued a somewhat ridiculous aspect of it during his studies in a respectable British University, he placated his father, an old school military gentleman, by actively participating in school sports and all kinds of physical activities. He was even a junior champion in their fencing team.
After he has became a respectable author and popular lector in his field even his father has accepted his interest.

Re: [OCC] Lost in Dreams

He's lacking some functionality: Does he lecture on the Renissance Occult traditions? how does he make is money in RL? Or is he a linguist? in which case he probably ought to have at least one rank in linguist.

He can't drive a car, but he can ride a horse? hmm. The rapier and boxing are unexpectedly good. I'll call one of those at those levels plausible.

Alchemy is the study of historical attempts at alchemy, I assume.

As a note, he has under average strength in this campaign (men average out at 11. Thats fine, just don't think you're average).

I'm seeing a dearth of social skills as well. Just because you can't see a roll here doesn't mean they aren't being made like crazy. (I love this screen!)

He also still has up to 10 points of "fluff skills".

could you spiff those up a bit?

I'll add some 1 point everyman skills and fluff. Maybe boating coud stay in fluff?

I think he'll make money in being a university lecturer/researcher and also a writer. He has good skill in his narrow specialty. Other history skills are somewhat lacking - but he has a dearth of good accompanying skills. Speed-reading and research combined with public speaking, writing and teaching will mean he will be able to quickly churn out articles needed to stay in academia (and they're good reads too!) , he will be a good public performer and therefore might be a rather popular lecturer.

I will take down boxing or rapier. Probably boxing - rapier staying more according to his hobbies. I don't know what socail skills to give him maybe some diplomacy and savoir-faire (high-society), he has a reaction bonus from talent also. Maybe if I find some points somewhere I'll buy him a level of charisma. A point in linguistics might be in order too.

at least one of the boating points can go into fluff. you might also consider a 4 point version of tenure as fluff. It may actually get used when he gets back...

Ahh... I see, he's not a research professor, he's the history professor who teaches that one awesome class. definitely see if there is room for some charisma. I'm not quite sure what social skills he needs either, but he certainly needs some.

fifiste 03-06-2013 01:49 PM

Re: [OCC] Lost in Dreams

I don't see him having any trouble for landing a cushy job. He has good academic backup skills and fine public speaking. Also he has +3 reaction bonus from colleagues and students(+2 talent and +1 workaholic).

I'd still have to give him some sway and influence for the possible adventures tho (can't stay cozily in his little world for long eh...). So I'll try to find some +-s to his reaction rolls somewhere.

About the fluff skills:
How much of his work related stuff could be stuck under these. It seems that several of them would not be very adventurous ..
writing and teaching for example. I'd put at least some of the histories under these also - unless of course they are too helpful for the world jumping capabilites (so lets say if we jump to Renaissance analogue earth I'd still get to stick medieval and ancient history as just a background skill and vice-versa).

No-fluff skills would of course be anything "martial" like and other too adventure useful thingies. (speaking of which I'll add 1 point of first aid)

edit: edited the character-sheet in this forum
Added Nicotine addiction and bad back.
Bought voice and charisma and some everyman skills (driving, first aid, bicycling)

Shuffled some of the background stuff into fluff - if we don't skip on too similar alternate earths for medieval or ancient Europe I think those could be considered irrelevant enough. When we do ... we can replace them with 2 other history skills that will not fond too much use (lets say ancient New World or whatever.) So he can be a history professor from fluff points.

He is now charismatic, diplomatic and absolutely killer public speaker. I'd bet he is cashing in on it by doing popular science speeches in talk shows etc. By getting history skills up with fluff points he is reputable enough on other fields too ... not only in his narrow specialty. I can bet he can make good academic career.

All this schmoozola should also help him find friends if we're ready to drop him on another world. Hopefully some friends from whom he can bum a cigarette or two :D

ericthered 03-07-2013 02:36 AM

Re: [OCC] Lost in Dreams

a couple of lingering concerns:

swap the history skills under "fluff" for the Magical traditions. They'll be at least as useful, though they won't help him cope as well. One of the boating skills needs to come out of fluff and into the useful category.

Tobacco is NOT going to be a cheap addiction around here. If you still want it, go for it, but bump it up five points and be aware he will frequently not have access to the stuff.

Finally, What do you mean by the Alchemy skill? Under RAW this is a magical skill that he wouldn't have access to.

he's shaping up!

fifiste 03-07-2013 03:19 AM

Re: [OCC] Lost in Dreams

Shuffled some of this around. Removed some skills. He already has one boating and rowboats don't fare well with bad back :D
Also removed alchemy and occultism = he knows the historical facts from his specific history skill. And of course he has had no possibility to learn actual magic skill.
Removed the Nicotine addiction - it mightbe fun to watch him climb the walls after being stranded somewhere for a few weeks :D but on the other hands messing with quirks and such for withdrawal seems like tedious work, also I don't want him to become a big pile of disadvantages.
So he enjoys his pipe, but has somehow avoided full blown addiction. (A case of lucky physiology I guess).
I will keep editing the one post with character-sheet on the previous page for all changes. I hope there wouldn't be many more of those coming:D

So where is my door situated on this hall. On and end and the arced wall on one and straight one (small doors) on the other.
Or is mine one of those larger or smaller doors - are we talking about a torus and I'm opening one of the doors on inside or outside

yours is one of the smaller doors-- its a torus and you're opening an outside wall door. sorry, I thought was obvious from the fact your door is under 5 feet tall.

Hey, I'm kind of new to gurps. I have read the rules and I am planning on GMing a game in RL for my friends. However I would like to play in a game as a player as to get used to the rules and have a good time. I noticed that in the looking for players thread that you where running a few single player campains and I'm kind of wondering if I can play in one of those games. I have an idea of a half-changling that grew up in a viking style world where the only fantastical element of it is a war between these mysterious creatures called changlings and the vikings in a battle between cunning and brute force.

zoncxs 03-07-2013 06:23 PM

Re: [OCC] Lost in Dreams

ok! this will be fun!

so my defense for him swing his barrel at me is a slip in parry to get into Close combat with him, then All out Grapple and Strike (MA page 118) with a kick to the leg telegraphed.

karate parry 8 + 1 for slip in = 9

Karate Grapple (clinch) neck 11 - 3 = 8

Targeted Attack (Karate Kick/Leg) 8 + 1 (Neck Control) +4= 13

3d6=9, 3d6=3, 3d6=10

that's if you allow it.

damage is 1d6-1 +1 (karate) + 2 (all out attack MA 118) = 1d6+2 to his leg.

his defense, if he doesn't avoid my clinch, is at normal grappled penalties +2.

took a while to get all the notes in one place!

Welcome to Gurps!

It is indeed possible for you to join in a Lost in Dreams game, but you should be aware this may not be the optimal solution to your desire to learn the rules. Compared to everything else on this forum these games are very opaque. I make most the rolls and only tell the players the IC results. Also, the current rules for this game exclude coming from a fantastic world: they all come from RL. That said, if you're purpose is to have fun and roleplay, this is a great series to join.

You're vikings vs changlings idea is awesome, and its probably going on the random world list, though.

I may be able to run a simple one-off series of simple senarios to get you used to the rules. I have to ask though, what is your GMing experience outside of Gurps, and which rules do you wish to practice? Theres a big difference between a D&D veteran looking to get the hang of the combat rules and a first-time roleplayer trying to figure how things work. PS: If you're interested in what I mentioned here please reply by PM rather than in this thread, as this is for Lost in Dreams.

Another thing you may want to do is start up your own game and let the players here teach you the game. They're a good mix of understanding and skilled with the rules.

hope this helps! you're still welcome to join with a modern character.

thanks! For rules that I'd need help with, I can't think of anything right now. I have spent a ortion of my free time trying to learn the rules, and I know alot about them off the top of my head. For GMing, I've only run 2 4th edition adventures. Everyone said they where fun even though we only got to the front entrance of the dungeon each time. As for this game, I could come up with something. Right now I'm split between an accountant who hates his job or a drifter who's been all over the world.
