in-combat death... helper left behind

My friends and I came across an interesting situation.

During a combat in which a helper was involved, a curse was played that invoked the bad stuff of the last discarded monster. So, the person currently taking their turn was killed by a monster not involved in the combat.

Does the poor helper have to continue on in the original fight? If so and if the monster is defeated, does the looted carcass go up a level? Also, what should be done with the monster's treasure?

Loud arguments insued but to no avail. Joint ownership of the game made a resolution impossible.

The player who died is out of the combat, can't do anything since he won't come back to life until after the current turn is over, and can't receive Level or Treasure rewards, since he's dead. The original combatant is, however, welcome to fight on, and even get another helper, since he no longer has one.

Now, if that Curse was played on the player whose turn it was, the combat ends and the helper gets out of it without having to Run Away.

"Impossible"? Really? Roll a die, high roller wins the argument, you all get on with life, and then you come here and check the official answer later. It's a game, not a treaty negotiation.

Thanks for the help!

The old roll a die trick, I'll have to put that one in my back pocket. Although you might be surprised how difficult resolutions can be over here, feels more like a hostage negotiation...
