new player - rules questions

Munchkin rookie here...just got the game as a family gift and love it. Just a couple of questions on some rules if anyone can clarify:
1. can you carry items (ie have them played in front of you) but not use them, even if they are not useable by your race/class. i.e. could a human have the bows and ribbons card in play even though they can't use it?
2. At the end of your turn, can you discard ANY cards from your hand in order to get down to five cards? The rules indicate that you cannot simply discard big items....does that only apply to items in play?
Thanks so much...I hope I've posted this in the appropriate place, otherwise could you redirect me.
Cheers.

Yes, as long as they obey any other restrictions (such as only having one Big item in play, meaning on the table, at once).

Right. You can discard or give as Charity (depending on your Level) any excess cards from your hand. This is just about the ONLY time you can give away Class and Race cards, for instance.
