Ogre coming to Mac!

You may have already heard this news, but we wanted to confirm that Ogre is indeed coming to Mac on Steam! We've had lots of requests for this, and so we're really glad to bring the game to those on Macs who wish to play the game! :)

We'll have more news on this soon, when you can expect it, etc.

Thanks!

This makes me very happy, since at home I am a Mac user.

That's great news! I'll be able to get in on the fun.

So with this impending, I'm looking at migrating my system state from "Windows" (Wine) to Mac. Anybody have any experience with using the Steam Backup/Restore tools to go between platforms? I'll be done with the Campaign in the next day or so and I'd hate to have to do it all over again if I don't have to.

Does completing the campaign unlock something? Why would you "have" to do it again? Or would you just not feel happy until you did? I'd be that way :)

Anyway, I can see this as a FAQ that we need an answer for.

Yes, it unlocks a completion badge and allows direct access to each for a replay. I would still have the badge, since that is in Steam, but game data is not directly shared between computers. The additional wrinkle is whether or not the game data files are compatible between OSes

Are there any iOS plans. Thanks.

None have been announced. We are lucky we got it on Mac at all; it was originally PC-only.

I'm still waiting for Linux native, but at least it plays properly under Wine so I'm not SOL.

I have a feeling that's going to be a long wait. I'll keep fighting for you, though!

Is the primary hurdle funding?

for iOS? It would be a lot more than funding. There's no such thing as Steam on iOS, so you'd have to port it to something else (standalone, etc). That means a host of new challenges to address, not the least of which are:
  • you'd isolate the players to platform (iOS can't play against desktop)
  • the interface would have to be rewritten (current controls wouldn't translate well)
The funding (the fact there isn't even money/market to justify "finishing" the Steam version) is a definite part, but far from the only part.

It still bugs me that there's DRM involved, too. When (not if) Steam goes away, so does Ogre. Anyone that thinks something like Steam will last forever is kidding themselves. I can still play my old copy of the Apple II version, because I own a physical copy of it and was able to convert to run in an emulator 30 years later. That will not be the case for the Steam version in another 30 years. Renting on iOS is not something I'm excited about, either.

I don't know if they've since recanted...but at least as of a few years ago Steam had an "Unkill Switch" pledge. If they ever shut down, "measures are in place" to remove their DRM as part of the shutdown.

Wouldn't help anyone that didn't get around to downloading before the system went kaput, but is a lot better than could be said for other gaming companies that happen to also own a digital storefront.

This isn't necessarily true. Star Realms ports from Steam to iOS seamlessly, as long as you're logged into your Star Realms account on both.

Interesting. I hope there's a framework that allows that to work and not an in-house solution. At least the theory is there.
