Magnificent Hat questions

Two questions, both regarding the Magnificent Hat:

1. Say you're wearing the Magnificent Hat and the Sandals of Protection. You kick open a door and find a curse. Does the curse disappear, or does it get deflected? ...or do I choose...?

2. Say you're wearing just the Magnificent Hat. You kick open a door and find a curse that you'd like to accept (I'm a dwarf and I get Dwarvish Ale, for example). Can you suddenly choose to stop using the Magnificent Hat (turn it sideways) and accept the curse?

1. You ignore the curse. The curse has no effect, so even if you reflect it, it does nothing. Why waste the effort rolling dice?

2. You don't get to choose to accept the curse. The Magnificent Hat says any curse. . .
