Stun Guns
I have two questions about stun guns.
First, can a stun gun cause unconsciousness if applied long enough? Last, can the defender (the one that's shocked) scream or otherwise talk while being paralyzed? It can be "by the book", but if there's anyone out there that has actually used one/seen one work, your help is appreciated. Thank you. EDIT: Another question. Do you need a license to buy one? I read that it's restricted in some states, but I don't know whether that just means you need a license, or if it's illegal... Last edited by Kuu; 09-13-2010 at 01:58 AM. |

A person will sometimes scream involuntarily, but I believe talking is out of the question except in very high-HT situations. In some states, it's illegal to own one. In others, you need a permit. Overall, I'd treat it as the same conditions as a conceal carry permit for those states in which it's restricted. Some people - due to Police or Military Rank, or Legal Enforcement Powers 2 or 3, or in some locales Status 2+ or Wealth (Filthy Rich or Multimillionaire) - will have have legal access to LC2 or even LC1 weaponry, either through the weapons being assigned to them or through the ability to grease palms via bribes and lawyers that make Johnny Cochrane look ethical. I'd look into the local laws for those regions to see how the stun gun is classified. All else fails, you can always require the character take the Permit Perk for the privilege to carry one.

Re: Stun Guns
First it is important to know if you mean stun guns or tasers as they work differently and for some reason a lot of people mix them up.
Stun guns are applied directly to the body and not the kind that shoot darts. Stun guns come in a variety of power levels. I used to use a 75kv one on long trips when I needed to wake up. Pulled over first of course and just zapped myself in the thigh for a good adrenaline rush. Only when I REALLY had to get home before dawn but it was handy once in awhile for that purpose. For self defense it was useless but if I held it on you for several seconds you would start to lose control of your limbs and maybe pass out after a minute or something. Never used it on anyone that long but it was a good training tool. About 250kv and up they start to be practical for self defense. results vary but that would be my minimum. Regardless you can hold on in contact for as long as you can hold the target and the longer the more disruptive it is. |

Re: Stun Guns
If you remove the front of a Taser, where the wires are, you can use it as a Stun Gun.

Stun Guns emit a constant current as long as the trigger is pulled. Tasers have two different outputs. Initially a higher voltage lower amperage current designed to start the current flowing and overcome resistance. The secondary drops the voltage (though its still fairly high) and is higher amperage then a comparable stun gun. That secondary load is where we get our deaths from Tasers. Still unusuall of course and the people who die are under special circumstances and often poor health, drugs, etc. |

Re: Stun Guns
Which kind of shock? I'm used to understand shock as either rapid and noticeable blood loss, or the little penalty one gets to their dice rolls in GURPS.

It is a little unclear. AFAIK, there is no way for a Taser or stun gun to cause circulatory shock, because they don't cause massive bleeding. |

While I was suspicious too, what made you certain that he wasn't one of the 'Troubled But Cute' posters like Ragitsu (who was mostly weird but harmless until recently)?
