Default Alternate XP award method.

I got a crazy idea the other night about awarding character points, here goes:
  • A certain amount of CP are banked at the beginning of each session, let's say whatever the best award for that session would be, let's say 5 times the number of players. This is a Common pool.
  • This would be a common pool of points that any player could draw upon, if everyone (GM included) agrees to the withdrawal.
  • Anything that CPs could normally be spent on is appropriate (if approved). Character advancement, buying successes, Bullet time whatever.
  • This pool can be fined as the GM sees fit.(say, for bad behavior)
  • Any points left over at session end remain in the bank and carry over til the next session

So, what does everyone think?

Sounds Sort of like Marvel Superheroes FASERIP's Karma Pool.

Hope your players are all very cooperative, and that they stay friends after you introduce this zero-sum system.

ME: "Hey, everyone! Can I buy my Magery up from 3 to 5 now? We've got 20 points in pool."

GAIUS SECUNDUS: "Sure, it'll let you heal us better."

GAIUS TIRTIUS: "No, buy 6 FP and leave a couple of points for the rest of us."

GAIUS QUATRUS: "Okay, if I get to take Weapon Master at the start of the next session."

...Yeah, I can totally see this working.

I am blessed with a particularly co-operative group.

I don't currently have plans to introduce this yet, it is, as I said in my original post, in the "crazy idea" (i.e.sleep deprived) stage.

So you think it would lead to hard feelings? Maybe a better model would be a personal award as well as a pool. The personal award would be for character advancement or whatever and the common pool would be only for the other stuff. Like roguebfl said a "Karma Pool".

My whole reason behind this I suppose is that I like the bullet-time and buying successes stuff but no one ever uses it. I guess CPs are seen as much too valuable to blow on transitory benefits.

I don't see any problem with the above as long as the bargaining and what not takes place outside of actual game time. Hmmm... In fact I actually kind of like it.

The potential is there. You know your players better than I do, though. The right group wouldn't have a problem with it. It does mean that the players are in competition with each other for the rewards. It also means that individual transgressions (fines to the pool) are suffered by everyone. This could help create peer pressure to avoid the bad behavior. It could also create resentment that Joe keeps screwing up my awards.

You could flip the system around, and have personal awards but allow contributions of those points to a pool. Perhaps the group all agrees that everyone donates 1 CP, or half their CP, or all their CP, to the common pool. The cooperative group that wouldn't have a problem with the first system would likely cooperate in the last. And if the pool didn't work, people could just stop contributing to it.
