Default [Spaceships] Rules Hunt...

I have seen mention of rules for putting spaceship components for SM larger into ships and I cannot find the rule for it, can anyone point me to that?

Canonically there are no such rules. It's pretty easy to houserule, though, and a few threads have looked at it.

Basically, for larger modules, a +1 SM system takes 3 system slots. For most systems, you can just use them as written for the larger ship after that. For armor, control rooms, and engines you need to make sure to think it through, and you probably shouldn't use oversized major batteries since they're already implemented as spinal batteries. And don't forget that oversized power points are bigger.

+1 SM systems don't have much going for them, since they're usually just the same as using three normal sized ones. It's -1 SM systems that are usually interesting, since they let you have more flexible design.

Thanks! I'm actually thinking of making a component where a +1 SM unit (in three slots, like I thought I remembered!) isn't equivelant to 3 +0 SM units in three slots. This helps a lot to know I was remembering the rule correctly. Hadn't been able to find any of the threads where it was discussed either...

It turns up in the Volkswagon Saga book.

It appears canonically in Spaceships in Book 7, using the Vorsikogan rules.

Cool, do we have a time table for the release of later Spaceship books yet? :)

So do +1 SM systems, since some components have a minimum SM (which especially comes into play with SM+4 craft using SS4.)

I don't have a timeline.

- Spaceships 5 and 6 could be out any time now. Depends on how far advanced they are in layout and when they feel is the best time to release.

- Spaceships 7 has to go through playtest, final draft, editing, and layout, so it will be some months from now. I'd hope it will be out this year, but it's too early to say. This book is largely devoted to new design rules and systems (and game rules to support them).

- Spaceships 8 is just starting writing, and must go through all of the above. It may be out near the end of the year, or come out sometime in 2010.

Cool, thanks David. I'm really looking forward to #7 as I suspect (maybe you can confirm?) that it'll have rules for making "flying saucers"? :)

Cool. Like the others said, it should be easy enough to house rule. I'd just figure for larger components I'll use 3 spaces for SM+1 and 10 spaces for SM+2. For smaller components I'd figure 1/3 space for SM-1 and 1/10 space for SM-2.
My main interest currently is to allow smaller external clamps to allow a freighter to carry a number of smaller cargo barges similar to the Birdsong(?) class packet from GURPS Traveller.
Maybe I should go ask the guy who is doing the Spaceships design PDF to include rules for that in a future update.

Edit: Sorry, meant to say Spaceship design Spreadsheet.
