Does GURPS support solo play?
Newbie Q:
Is it possible to play GURPS solo? (i.e., Player is the PC. Charts, dice, & other devices make decisions in place of a GM.) I have an old TSR RPG (Indiana Jones) with a number of solo player game modules that I thought worked reasonably well, given the limitations of solo play. I have yet to see any other RPGs that offer solo player mode, and I am just curious if solo play has been (or could be) developed for GURPS. |

Re: Does GURPS support solo play?
what point would an RP have to solo play? RPing is a social activity not a solo activity.

Re: Does GURPS support solo play?
The main benefit of GURPS is the high degree of customization possible.
It wouldn't translate well to a solo game which would need to be limited. |

Re: Does GURPS support solo play?
GURPS 3rd Basic Set had a very short solo adventure (called "All in a nights work" iirc) in the back to introduce a reader to the most important rules.
But other than that, I don't know of any. |

Re: Does GURPS support solo play?
It is possible. But you'll be missing most of the fun from the casual RPG game. You will probably know the plot and all the things you shouldn't know, you will miss the element of suprise,
most importantly, there's no interaction with other people in any kind of solo play, so it's actually better to go for a computer game or, i don't know, a crossword or something, if you don't have any firends around. Playing RPG would be wasting a potential. ( Finding players for a game is very good way to meet people and find friends, actually. If lack of players is the case. ) By the way, there are board games and other text-based games that can be palyed solo - some are even designed for that purpose. Of course, there aren't as fun as good, few hour, action and drama filled game session. ( Laughing, quoting movies and talking about unrelated stuff while eating pizza is still nice. Many sessions end up that way. ( -.-" ) ) Last edited by kasamui; 04-15-2008 at 10:17 AM. |

Re: Does GURPS support solo play?
I think there were some old Conan solos, but personally the only good use I could ever put those kinds of products to was first pass rules familiarity... once you know how skills, stats, combat etc. work it loses it's purpose in my eyes.

Re: Does GURPS support solo play?
If it is a problem with players you should seek them out at a nearby or local game store. Unless you are shy. Most GM's who setup at a game store usually have some extra stock characters for newcomers to use. The other alternative is Play by Post or Play by E-mail. Some GM's have gone technical and use a 3rd party program to play in real time for the most part. There's also the possibility of Private Chatroom Gaming too. Just a matter of finding the right one.
But all in all, meet some people, get them interested and start up your own game. Even if you need to drive or be driven to a central location for hosting, maybe one of the players are in the middle of everyone.

Re: Does GURPS support solo play?
It's quite possible to use the tactical combat rules as a solitaire wargame.
As for solitaire adventures, Conan Beyond Thunder River was the best one SJG put out IMO. I was writing a solitaire but it got sidelined. Among other issues I got the feeling that it wasn't the type of thing people actually want anymore.

PS: I acknowledge in the past, "playing solo" was in some degree entertaining, and it was a way for training some rules knowledge, and perhaps something more. But that was very long ago . . . Today, I can't see very well the point of that, but that can be exclusively my problem.
