Does anyone have any good links to utilities for generating terrain for a worldmap? Ideally something not web based?

Campaign Cartographer is a good set of programs, if you don't mind spending money for a good program - http://www.profantasy.com/

This is about making awesome looking maps in Photoshop. You can get similar results in GIMP, but not identical. I love this thing.

Unsurprising. However, interesting. I should poke around the Cartographers' Guild some more sometime. I've come to enjoy playing around with some of the stuff I've learned from the Zombie Nirvana videos. Pity I don't have a fantasy game planned to use cool maps in. ;)

Hehe...I know the feeling: Player in a marvelous low magic fantasy; GM in a modern suspense that's on hiatus; GM in a super science campaign that won't need much in the way of planet based mapping for a while...sigh. LOL
