Default Using retreats without being attacked

Normally you are limited to Move yards per turn, but retreat gives an extra yard of movement. This allows people who are attacked to move faster than those who are not attacked.

Is there any harm in allowing to spend their retreat during their own turn to get that extra move? Probably a bad idea for most since it deprived you or a bonus if you get attacked.

You don't really get more distance, since you have to retreat backward.

Well, more precisely, you have to retreat away from the attack. Either way, you don't usually get more distance out of it.

IIRC you can't Retreat while Sprinting for the +20% move bonus, so I guess what Hellboy is describing already exists in the rules.

Not since Martial Arts, you don't - you can 'retreat' laterally or forward.

Sprinting imposes major additional limitations.

Retreats seem to function like a step you can take after the start of your turn but before the next turn. Maybe it could function sort or like a Wait maneuver? usually in the form of "wait until I am attacked and do X" although very open ended since X can be chosen on the spot.

That yard of movement is an artifact of the quantization of movement into hexes.

I would do it the other way around. So in the turn after you used retreat you would have -1 move. Down to 0 for manoeuvres that normally allow a step

This way you would never be faster than someone who spends their turn moving. But would also prevent people from effectively "double stepping".

It would have significant tactical consequenses though. Reach would be much more important as you can't both retreat and then step back and attack.

I would use this in a low powered game with focus on combat-tactics.

I had always assumed you couldn't Retreat if you moved more than a "Step". I don't remember where I got this from, but it solved this issue.

Right I should have said step... Would I be right thinking move 10 = 2 yard retreats?

It's be move 11 (Move / 10 [round up] - so if the Move is 10, it'd be 10/10 = 1.0), but I believe so, yes.
