For fire trolls remove regeration blockers add cold to slow regeneration and electricity to block it entirely!

My take on PC DF Trolls. Monster DF trolls are in DFM 1.

Which edition of D&D's trolls are you aiming to emulate?

Significantly how vulnerabilities work with regeneration. The DFM1 version works like 2e Trolls, with damage from fire and acid specifically not regenerating.

That's actually how it works for everything below 4th edition, it's just that the mechanics used to reflect that were a bit different in different editions (3e treats damage that isn't in a vulnerable category as subdual damage). 4th and 5th did away with that most likely because annoying bookkeeping.

To help illustrate your point (ahem):

All the creatures depicted on this page are trolls

(Seriously, those of us not from Scandinavia should be aware that "troll" up there is about as specific as "fairy" is further down ... that is, approximately not at all). Also, for the non-grognards, the scaly, regenerating troll comes more or less from Poul Anderson's "Three Hearts and Three Lions".

AD&D 2nd Edition tolls "can scale even sheer cliffs with an 80% chance of success," so to the DFM1 troll add Climbing-16 (p. B349: a vertical stone wall has a -3 modifier and effective skill 13 is an 83.8% chance of success).

They also "have a poor sense of hearing," so give them Hard of Hearing.

Otherwise the DFM1 troll is pretty spot-on as an interpretation of the AD&D 2nd Edition troll.

In Pathfinder, you just need to do any amount of fire or acid (even 1 point) to prevent regeneration. ISTR that 3.5 was the same way.
