Re: [Game] Work Up a Steampunk Setting
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transylvania_Colony. I needed a name for Kentuckassee, and it fits OK.
Seminole is named for the Florida Natives; Indian Nations of Alabama is cludge to slide in the Cherokee Autonomous district without drawing tiny states; Arkansaw is the old spelling; Superior and Huronia are named for the Great Lakes. New Hampshire's bigger because a few decisions went a different way. Cascadia is named for the Cascade Range. Buffalo was named for the province proposed by Frederick Haultain, in this timeline he carved off a territory on the plains. Northern Territories is a revision of North West Territories because it isn't too westerly any more. |

Anyway, since the burner's been relit on this thread, I thought I'd throw out a challenge to see if we can build a new head of steam. Thus: Question 81 Campaign and Adventure Seed Challenge Week For the next week, I am seeking as many campaign frameworks and adventure seeds as we can imagine, based on the setting that we have so far. They could be anything from a one sentence idea, to a comprehensive campaign prospective or adventure run-through- it's up to you! Feel free to build on anything already given, or add in something new if you need. An adventure seed is just enough of an idea for a GM to throw together a session or two's worth of adventure, while I see a campaign framework supplying more information about an adventuring party and an ongoing plot for it to pursue. Refer to the wiki for easy research and referencing. You have... ONE WEEK!

Answer 81A
Adventure Seed- Lord Pembury's Protectors Following from this post, where we discover that The Kingfisher is onto the dastardly strike-breaking plot of Lord Archibald Paterson, of Pembury Estate... The PCs are a group of police or military types with government ties, who are summoned by Lord Pembury. He reports that he feels his life is threatened, as a number of his interests have recently suffered major setbacks. Not least of these was an attack on a ship of his after leaving the Dutch port of Middelburg, the captain being mysteriously harpooned on the deck of the bridge from out of the night sky by an unseen attacker. The PCs therefore must identify the attack as a daring and ambitious expansion of the Kingfisher's MO and standard hunting grounds, then try to track them down. In the meantime, they may become aware of Lord Pembury's own iniquities and end up investigating his crimes and conspiracies. At some point, they may have to decide whose side they are on- the corrupt aristocracy, a bloodthirsty vigilante, or that of law and justice?

His Majesty's Special Service While the press pays considerable attention to the ongoing bloodletting in the Congo, pressure has also begun to build South Africa. His Majesty holds a narrow strip of excellent land along the east and west of Capetown, but the further inland one travels, the more dangerous the journey. The Boers have always resented the presence of British colonies in land they consider their own, and the discovery of gold and diamonds in territory they control has only increased the danger. Additionally, the brutal treatment of the natives by the descendants of Dutch protestant exiles, who treat blacks with callous disregard for human decency, is an affront to any civilized citizen of the British Empire. It also poses a long term threat, in that those blacks not directly under the heel of the Boers have begun to arm themselves. Rumors of arms trafficking to the warlike Zulu nation should give pause to any thinking person. Additionally, the isolated valleys in the Drakensberg Mountains provide haven for airship pirates, mad scientists, bandits and insurrectionists of all sorts. It constantly generates raiders, rebels and other unsavory individuals who create difficulties for peace-loving people throughout the region. Fortunately, His Majesty's government has recently focused its attention on these ongoing problems. In addition to funding for a more robust conventional military presence, the Special Service shall dispatch a small group of highly trained and dedicated personnel from throughout the empire, tasked with reconnaissance, investigation, development of intelligence and activities euphemistically known as "operations other than war." The task group will have at its disposal the HMAS Pelican, a small, older cargo dirigible seized from Arcadian smugglers, last year. The team is encouraged to create artificial identities for themselves and the airship, so as to pursue their assignments mostly as they see fit (within the laws of war). Additionally, the team shall be expected to develop their own intelligence networks, to allow them to generate leads about potential threats. While His Majesty's government will provide such clandestine support as they may, the task group shall function as a "deniable asset," and logistical assistance shall largely depend upon the group's ability to act with discretion.

Answer 81C: The Rails of the Sierra Madre Neuva Viscaya has long since been coveted by its neighbors for its natural resources, including silver gold reserves and arable land suitable for ranching. In the late 19th century, Presidente Luis Terrazas was elected and subsequently opened Neuva Viscaya to foreign investment. With a breakthrough in Froth Flotation making silver mining in Cusihuiriachic District profitable, the economy of Neuva Viscaya exploded, with significant expansion of foreign investment by Californian, Texan, and Brazilian concerns. A few months ago, a Californian railroad company owned by Senator Julio Vasquez, financed by his new railroad subsidies act, began building a rail link through Sierra Madre mountains to connect Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua to the Pacific. The goal of the link is to enhance relations between California and Neuva Viscaya by expanding commerce between the nations, so it will be more amenable to annexation. However, construction of the link has been marred by the collapse of multiple tunnels. The government of Neuva Viscaya is content with blaming Wobblies and Villistas; Senator Vasquez is not. PCs are investigators contracted by Vasquez to find the real culprit in the collapse of the tunnels. Solving the crime requires the PCs to navigate the complicated web of conspiracy that ties Francisco Madero, Pancho Villa, General Porfirio Diaz of the Mexican Alliance, Venustiano Carranza, the Kempetai, Dom Augusto Leopoldo of Brazil and German Undersecretary of State Arthur Zimmermann. The scheme was orchestrated by Venustiano Carranza and Porfirio Diaz. The idea is to stir up chaos (Carranza finances this) in Neuva Viscaya to force Luis Terrazas to call for elections. They target Californians because they feel this might force California to adjust their policy in the region. Francisco Madero will naturally run against him, and after an engineered scandal for Terrazas, Madero will be assassinated. Pancho Villa will rise up, and with weapons allegedly left in the desert by Texans (but financed by Carranza), seize control of the government easily. Diaz would invade Neuva Viscaya, and with the supply of weapons shut off, crush the Villistas. Carranza becomes Presidente of Neuva Viscaya under the Mexican Alliance, and Diaz becomes leader of the Mexican Alliance. Dom Augusto Leopoldo was brought in by Diaz to provide military aid, when he was impressed by Villa's leadership. Leopoldo agreed, because being a war hero would be good for winning support of the army when he tries to coup his brother, Dom Pedro. If their plots to destabilize Neuvo Viscaya are discovered, they've have framed the Kempetai as a contingency. They are active in the region, and many of the plots have been against California. A war between California and Japan is seen as constructive for their scheme, because they believe it will distract the Californian enough to let the Mexican Alliance to invade without response. Zimmermann's been assigned to improve relations with Neuvo Viscaya and the Texan Federation. He's been nosing around the "Villista" attacks to help build a repertoire with Terrazas and the Texans. Carranza wants him dead because he thinks he is getting too close. When the PCs blow the case wide open, they could inform Zimmermann so Terrazas is warned of the scheme. |

Re: [Game] Work Up a Steampunk Setting
Answer 81D:
The elected monarch of germany, Franz Joseph of Austria, has died, and its time for the german monarchical elections. Who will be the next emperor of germany? The emperor's inside circle doesn't believe the man died of old age though: he was the picture of health, and a private autopsy has revealed he was poisoned. Foreign governments are suspected. The evidence points to France, their ally, which is odd. Do they feel a different emperor would suit their interests betters and allow them to be the senior partner of the entente? or are they being framed by someone who wants to see German and French relations chill? or even by an internal German faction that prefers Prussian dominance over Austrian? The PC's must figure out who actually killed the emperor. And then they must figure out what 'truth' they actually want to present to the world.

Answer 81E: Stealth Tech
The Chancellor of State for War has had his boffins working night and day on stealth dirigibles- quiet, dark, and hard to see. But whatever they come up with hasn't satisfied him, especially since he's heard the rumours about this villain tearing about the countryside in just such a device- The Kingfisher. Perhaps the only way to please his lordship is to... acquire... by whatever means, the designs from this scoundrel. The first step is just to.... what exactly? Surely these PCs sitting here have an idea or two?
