Buildings in Operation Newspaper?
Steve Jackson's "Operation Newspaper" scenario uses 'all other white buildings' from the Shockwave set.
Does anyone have a listing of what these are? I actually have Shockwave, but the counters are cut up so I can't tell what's what. In the interim, I'm using: - 6 Admin Buildings - 6 Command Posts - 2 Hardened CPs - 1 Reactor - 2 Laser Towers - 2 Laser Turrets That gives me the '19 total', but I'm not sure what to assume for SPs. |

Re: Buildings in Operation Newspaper?
I don't know how accurate this is, but I put together a list at one point, and here's what I can find of it:
2 x 20 SP Laser Tower 2 x 20 SP Laser Turret 3 x 10 SP Admin 3 x 20 SP Admin 3 x 30 SP Admin 2 x 60 SP Reactor 2 x 60 SP Strongpoint 1 x 70 SP Strongpoint 1 x 80 SP Strongpoint

Re: Buildings in Operation Newspaper?
Thanks; I checked for replies just in time. Went with a randomized setup - I used the hexes that I chose, but rolled randomly for buildings (like with the solo guidelines).
Sure are a heck of a lot of SP to keep track of. |

Re: Buildings in Operation Newspaper?
The original scenario calls for both GEV and Shockwave maps.
How does this translate into the ODE maps? |

Re: Buildings in Operation Newspaper?
Wow; that *is* a fiddly scenario. Between the initial placement, all the building SPs, the reactor rules, and all the rolls to check if the PE forces notice the LGEVs, I could barely keep my head straight to think through tactics.
Definitely not a scenario for beginners... |

Operation Newspaper Session Recap/Review.
I got around to posting a Session Recap/Review for Operation Newspaper.
You can find it here: Operation Newspaper (Session Recap). My conclusion (from the post): Overall, Operation Newspaper is a cool idea (and the solo rules were appreciated), but too fiddly for my tastes. I give it 2 out of 5 nuclear trefoils. Operation Newspaper (Scenario): ☢☢◯◯◯ (2/5)Thanks again, everyone, for your prompt response to my question about buildings in the scenario. I've included the listing in my post. |

Re: Buildings in Operation Newspaper?
Nice writeup - I suspect that this is scenario that might work better as Play-by-Email given the waits, but it also depends on how patient you and your opponent are :) Either that, or it's a good solo scenario.
One note: You can't stack 8 LGEVs in one hex. The stacking limit is 5 vehicles (where INF count as 1/3 vehicle), not 5 AU. That's why the scenario states "obeying stacking limits after his first move." I don't know how much that would have changed your results, probably not that much.

I believe you're correct, though: it wouldn't have made much difference. I would have split into equal 4-squads, and might have lost one overrun movement point in some cases. |

The following would be helpful for one player to master, to speed everything up: * Create a scenario sheet in advance for keeping track. * Layout the board a few times in advance to get a feel for emplacing the buildings. It turns out getting the buildings emplaced correctly has ramifications on both attacker and defender. But they are a total p.i.t.a. to emplace the first time. * Place the PanE units a couple of times in advance as well, to get a feel for where they set up. * Mark the reinforcement hexes with spare dice, so nobody needs to hunt all over the board. * Separate all the counters necessary for the scenario in advance so there's no need to go hunting around for counters while setting up. What would really be cool is a scenario "card" with all the relevant info printed right on the card. This could include set up info, reinforcement location and units, VP assessment, etc. Sort of like a cross between the old PanzerBlitz Situation Cards and Ogre Record Sheets. Would really contribute to game play. If one player has set up and played the scenario a couple of times, it might work really well before less experienced players. The set up is the hardest part, and once that's done, it's fairly straightforward. At least, we really enjoyed it. |
