This sector is known as Thinker's Forum, and most of the naming was done in the first survey scouting pass of the 800's.

Question 84 [HIS]
If the Republic settled so many systems, why do they only control three today? (Did many leave with the 43rd in Exile? Separated on their own accord? Is there a 41st Republic floating around?) (5 Sentences)
Answer 84
Despite the grandiloquent titles, there is no direct descendancy from the 1st Terran Republic to the current republics. After a period of dark ages, in 1010 ETR, the 20th Republic arose without an immediate antecedent, and named itself as the ideological successor to the Terran Republic and 18 various other grand yet unconnected republics. Thus the Republics are significant players in this neck of the galaxy, but not major players in the grander scheme. That is to say, they didn't settle such a large number of systems to start with.
(Sorry, I think this dodges the question slightly, and maybe contradicts the Century of Expansion part. Let me come back to this later.)

Question 85 [TL]
85a)
Why was there TL9 tech still around in the 3500s AD? (Referring to UP when it was installed on the station.)
(d6: 3 sentences)

85b)
For that matter, if it's 4102 AD, why is most of the tech TL10, with only precursor stuff at TL11?
(d6: 1 sentence)

Well, part of this is that there's no good term for exclusively Republics 39-44, and besides that, the expansion was largely confined to Thinker's Forum, I just didn't have a name for it yet.

Despite the advanced technology of the Heaven's Tribes, they didn't really have much understanding of how any of it actually worked, much less how to build more of it. In fact, computers in general are a sort of "lost art" for humanity, with the most advanced human built being thousands of years old. Nonetheless, the Heaven's Tribes were still capable enough to build and program UP.

Technology in general is so primitive primarily because of the increased factionalism and division among the interstellar states, and the rise of Terran Orthodoxy.

Question 86 [SET]
What is Terran Orthodoxy? (Religion? Philosophy? Something Else?) (4 Sentences)

Question 87 [SET]
What's Earth like in 2001 ETR? (6 Sentences)

Answer 75 Vol IV[HIS]
The Rise and Decline of the Terran Empire
1683 ya - 318 ETR/2419 AD - The Colonies Rebel
1665 ya - 336 ETR/2437 AD - Anton Luo Declares Martial Law
1616 ya - 385 ETR/2486 AD - Terran Directorate Collapses
-- Battle of Europa.
1610 ya - 391 ETR/2492 AD - Terran Empire Crushes Sigma Draconis, reunifying humanity.
1316 ya - 685 ETR/2786 AD - Terran Empire Reorganizes.
1189 ya - 812 ETR/2913 AD - Emperor Jun II killed in assault on Imperial Palace
-- Generally agreed upon date of the Collapse of the Terran Empire.

In 2419, in response to steadily increasing taxes, anti-radical (some say anti-democratic) laws, and general supremacy of Terrans, a coalition of colonies centered on Sigma Draconis rebelled from Terran rule. This was followed by the first space battles since 2183.

In 2437, war hero Admiral Anton Luo blockaded Old Earth, before landing at the head of ten thousand marines. In the wake of potential popular uprisings, the senate voted unanimously to cede authority to Luo and the Terran military.

In 2486, the Terran Directorate collapsed, amidst a power struggle between the three most powerful players of the Supreme Council; Counter-Admiral Melissa Luo (grand-niece of Anton), Chief Executive Faisal Aydın of Paragon Heavy Industries plc, and Governor Jie Moriarty of Alpha Centauri. In the end, the power struggle was settled with forces loyal to Luo on one side, and those backing civilian authority on the other, at the Battle of Europa.

In 2492, the Republic of Sigma Draconis, the last of the errant republics, was defeated by the nascent Terran Empire. The Terran Empire then oversaw one of the longest periods of peace and prosperity in human history.

In 2786, after a series of costly and indecisive battles, the Peace of New Berlin resolved the Terran succession crisis. Empress Violet II would take the throne, however, her rivals would be given broad autonomy (albeit while renouncing their claims), and increased authority would be placed in the hands of regional governors.

In 2913, Emperor Jun II was killed during an assault on the Imperial Palace. Following this date, the authority of Terran Emperors barely extended beyond the Local Sector, and were marked by near constant warfare.

While the vast majority of the 10 billion population of the Sol System lives in gigantic orbital habitats, Earth's small population (~400 million) depends heavily on interstellar tourism and the entertainment industry. With over 10 billion visitors a year, a two week stay on Earth is considered the ultimate vacation, whether it is camping in the Sahara Grasslands or exploring the underwater ruins of ancient London. In addition, the Earth exports the original genetic material required to terraform new planets and to replenish collapsed ecosystems.

The entertainment industry is alive and well on the Earth, with a tenth of the population supporting the industry. While its locations are primarily used for historical cinema, every major entertainment studio in Human Space has an office on the Earth. Many famous entertainment professionals retire to Earth, so they also contribute to its prosperity.

The Zeroth Republic has a small, but notable presence on New Hong Kong. The Zeroth Republic is allegedly a group formed almost a thousand years ago to protect the ideals of the then recently founded 20th Republic. The Zeroth Republic is more active outside of and further away from descendants of the 20th Republic, where they surveil and eliminate potential threats to the Republics. They tend to stay out of conflicts between the Republics, but nonetheless they were involved in the turmoil between the 43rd and 44th Republics, but I can't recall which side.

A19b
The Red Company was founded by Forty-Thirders who sought to exploit the extra-territorial nature of New Hong Kong to access precursor technology. Following the Treaty of New Hong Kong (1986 ETR/4087 AD), all Forty-Thirder nationals were to be handed over to Forty-Fourther authorities for interrogation and trial. The Red Company then went underground, and are believed to have links to Admiral Silla's Navy.

Question 88 [SET]
Which does the Zeroth Republic back; the 43rd or the 44th Republic, and why? (2 Sentences)

(d6: 5 Sentences)

Before the Yellow Expedition changed the status of New Hong Kong, the space dwelling population of Pascal's Wager was much smaller than the planet-dwelling population, at maybe one tenth of the population of the New Kowloon. With the rise of New Hong Kong as a major commercial center, the space-dwelling population has swelled to almost twice New Kowloon. The space-dwelling population has many more Servitors and Pascalons, and fewer Pentyches.

The Joygrrl Fundoll is the latest craze. Sporting a TL10 compact high-capacity genius personal biocomp running a Complexity 10 SAI within a custom 'female' biodroid, the Joygrrl is programmed to be the best friend (or friend-with-benefits) for the children of the ultrawealthy. With a price tag of $4 million ($3 million for the biocomp and $1 million for the unique cutting-edge biodroid body), the Joygrrl is the new status symbol for the 'it' crowd. The rumors that it also functions as a particularly deadly bodyguard is unconfirmed.
