My understanding is that the final files for Melee/Wizard had gone to print.

But now that Steve has tweaked (and finalized) the staff rules for ITL, will those changes have made it into the Wizard basic rules?

Sorry in advance if I have missed a point somewhere and am needlessly causing alarm!

Note that Wizard lacks the advanced staff types of ITL. Any wizard under the M/W rules could be forgiven for just using a club.

Correct; Wizard only had the basic Staff spell. I suppose they will be inconsistent w/r to the ST cost of the attack and the roll vs. IQ. That's what you get for changing your mind! I'm sure we'll all learn to live with it.

Wizards in Wizard are just bashing people with clubs. This is entirely consistent with ITL, if in some cases suboptimal.

I took it to mean "isn't dropped or broken on critical misses". Otherwise, I'd expect the rules to say something like "Always hits if adj DX is 18 or more."

I don't think that is correct. See p. 19 of the Wizard manuscript.

Yes, I agree that's the most reasonable interpretation. Could be worded a bit more clearly than it currently is, but I suspect most folk will understand it this way. It's just me that was muddled. ^_^

Note carefully the difference in the wording between the Wizard Spell Reference and ITL for Spell Shield. Wizards in the Wizard game aren't using the occult strikes from their staffs. At ST 8 they'll do a 1d strike with a club.

Staff rule looks much better in the official version of the PDF now. It's more of a ready-spell kind of weapon. The rules governing them are much clearer at all levels of the spell now, and the "what can it be made of" guidelines are also nicely clarified. Kudos to the team!

I agree; this was nicely moderated in the 'beta review' period. The same thing happened with the new martial arts talents, just more quickly (and so perhaps forgotten by some at this point). There has to be room for authorial creativity, but you also don't want to mess up something that's had 40 years of successful play testing. The end result hits just the right note.
