Default The Bermuda Depths....

Anybody remember an old TV 'movie of the week' from 1978, called The Bermuda Depths, starring a 22 year old Connie Sellecca?

Nope. What's the geek connection?

Aside from Bermuda Triangle, a giant ship-destroying turtle, a girl who sold her soul for immortality in 1720, scientists trying to study the cause of gigantism in sea life in Bermuda region, and a giant high-power harpoon and a case of Ahab Syndrome?

Seriously, it's hard to categorize this thing.

Not to be confused with _The Bermuda Triangle_, made the same year. There was apparently a bit of a Bermuda Triangle craze right around that year, I vaguely remember several other films, books and TV episodes involving it from the late 70s.

Amazon will sell you a copy of _The Bermuda Depths_ on DVD if you wanted to see it for some reason.

Sounds like a great movie that could spawn a roleplaying campaign. Not so much for Geek Culture. I'll move the thread for you.

In all seriousness, this movie could form a perfectly useful basis for a GURPS swashbucklers/pirates setting, or any Age of Sail adventure set after about 1500 A.D. (because it's set in the Bermuda Triangle, you need the adventurers to have access to that region).

The key character of 'Jennie Haniver' isn't born until 1701, but her master is out there before that. In fact, the backstory of this movie could play into any adventure in that part of the world from 1500 to today. It could also be incorporated into anything involving kaiju.

You could always go very alternate history and have sailing ships magically transported to the triangle from European/etc. waters pre-1500.

I'm not 100% sure how 'alternate' that would be, actually. I harbor the strong suspicion that European ships probably reached the Americas several times before and between Ericson and Columbus, by accident or other reasons. It was just that the conditions were never right for anything to come of it.

I can't prove it, but it's my strong sneaking hunch.

The key thing is in what shape did they arrive, and if they ever survived the journey back (and in what shape).

Having a ship get driven across the North Atlantic all the way to Newfoundland (the closest point if you're coming from northern Europe) is probably possible, but it's not very plausible that it survives that kind of storm intact, and it's likely to have been in October or November - which means arriving/wrecking on the shores of Canada unexpectedly, with no supplies for a long term expedition, probably with a mostly-wrecked ship and less crew than you started with... just in time for winter.

Landing on Newfoundland in particular would be harsh because finding good wood to repair your ship would be tricky. And the storms are horrible.

I know this is a nitpick, but Leifur Erķksson is the first man of Nordic origin to sail to N-America. There were several of his contemporaries who sailed there after he had come back with the news that there was land there. There are sources for all this.
