Default Q about applying Ranged +40% to DR

This is done for Force Dome in Protection and Warning Spells.

It lasts forever (no duration) except due to sorcery that's hard (1 fp per minute)

But does this function like obscure where you can use Innate Attack (Gaze) to create one dome per second (fp/min each) or are you limited to having one at a time like Ranged Possession?

I always understood it to be that you had a single force dome that you could place anywhere up to your range limit. Having 2 or more domes at once would involve buying the entire spell repeatedly.

Ranged +40% (from B107) simply would not work with DR at all.

If it somehow did, it would last 10 seconds on your target (not sure where the Dome idea comes from) and you would not be able to use it again until it wears off.

So I really don't get your question.

It is part of the build for Force Dome in GURPS Sorcery: Protection and Warning Spells, along with Affects Others, Area Effect, and Force Field.

Ranged DR will NOT protect others unless it also has Affects Others (Powers 107), in fact Ranged makes no sense on DR without Affects Others. To make the dome you're asking for you also need Force Field (P108) as well as Area Effect.

From Sorcery :
Quote:
Any spell with a duration of “Indefinite” can be maintained for as long as the sorcerer wishes.
This costs 1 FP per minute, but does not require concentration (or any other special actions) unless specified.
However, while maintaining a spell a sorcerer cannot cast further spells . . . unless he has paid extra for Simultaneous Spells .
So, I would say only one force dome at a time, unless you paid for Simultaneous Spells.

If you did paid for Simultaneous Spells, then the box on p8 explicitly allow several complex illusion, no reason to think Force Dome would be different.

So, is this a question regarding Sorcery, in which case the answer according to Thaumatology - Sorcery p 8 seems to be you can only have 1 Dome, unless you've paid for additional spells, or a question about generic DR with Affects Other (Powers p 107) Area Effect (Basic) Force Field (Basic) and Ranged (also Basic) because the answer to the second question seems a bit more complicated.

Building a distant force-bubble/dome abillity is one of those situations where it is generally more of a side-grade to regular DR, but ends up costing dramatically more due to the big enhancement stack you need to throw on it.

Personally I wouldn't bother with Affect Others whatever RAW may claim. It is just a needlessly expensive enhancement despite the huge built-in limits. Besides, if you have force-field as an enhancement your barrier should protect anyone within it (whether you want it or not). Otherwise your AoE-force field+affects others could also be read as you putting a bunch of force-bubbles around everyone in the area instead of one big one.

Affects Others + Force Field + Area Effect is apparently a special case given under Affects Others (Powers p 107-108) which creates a single bubble that affects everyone in it and protects from attacks from outside, having no effect on everyone's attacks against other people inside the bubble and not hindering attacks that go out of it.
So reading it as placing a personal bubble on anyone within your Area Effect would not be correct.

Sure, it's expensive +50%, +20% and +50% (at least) respectively, you pay more than double for that DR, but it can now protect more than 2 people at the same time, and if you and a couple of friends had it, the effects could also stack (or whatever the rules in your setting are for overlapping force fields)

Affects Others aside, the big issue is that you're paying an awful lot for a power which is more easily subverted than just standard DR.

As a GM I'd much rather see a guy with DR 40 in a targeted AoE with an exact and unchangeable 8 meter radius, than a guy with just vanilla DR 40.

The absolute-dome wannabe makes a ton of trade-offs for his protective bubble, and it is often not tactical to use the power. Meanwhile 40 DR makes you almost immune to most attacks outside of Modern or Supers campaigns, and is always useful in a fight.
