Aquilonian crossbow
The situation arose where a player had declared it as a 1 handed item with a +2 bonus and was using it along with another 1 handed item. The player kicked down the door and faces a monster was cursed and lost the other one handed item and now wanted to change how they were using the item now that they have a free hand. It is my understanding that you can't change items during the middle of combat.

You are correct. You can't change the status of an Item once you're in the middle of combat.

Re: Aquilonian crossbow
That was my understanding of the rules. The player was arguing that they lost 1 hand worth of items and that logic would dictate that now that they have a free hand that they could use the crossbow with 2 hands and receive the +4 bonus associated with it, and that the rule for changing items in combat on pertains to adding a new item from your hand.

Nope, you can't switch Items you are using with Items you have in play, or how you are using the Items you are already using. Nor can you play new Items (except one-shot Items, but you have to use them to play them during combat).
