Default D&D SRD Monsters & Magic Product(s)?

The thought occurs -- now that the D&D SRD5 has been released under CC BY 4.0, it would be entirely legally possible for SJ Games or a licensee thereof to release a Dungeon Fantasy product or products straight up adapting the monsters, magic items, and spells in the SRD.

Ioun stones, the Deck of Many Things, magic missile, prismatic wall, gelatinous cubes, otyughs . . .

Personally I think it's a useful idea, but the mods shut down the last thread along these lines.

The vast majority of SRD monsters wouldn't need any licensing because they're not original to D&D in the first place. An awful lot of them are already in GURPS. The same goes for most of the magic items.

Which is another way of saying "it would be a small, manageable project".

If not already in the GURPS Monsters book, try the Gaming Ballistic Book, Nordlondr Ovinabokin: Bestiary and Enemies Book.

It's more a case of "there's no rational reason to tie any of it to D&D". Just public a bestiary of classic monsters.

The reason to tie it to D&D is to make it easier to consume the many, many D&D-adjacent adventure modules out there, most of which are quite bad, but some are amazingly good.

You know this though because we've discussed it before, and you called it "piracy."

1) A small product adapting those elements in the SRD that actually need licensing produces new options for DF/GURPS games that otherwise the publisher couldn't publish.

2) A small product adapting those elements in the SRD that need licensing makes it easier at the margin to attract people from the D&D audience, which then enlarges the market for a publisher to sell other DF/GURPS product.

But, sure, there's no rational reason for a publisher to consider the idea at all.
