Vehicles has been in development a lot longer than Discworld or Mars Attacks.

Has Bestiary been in development longer still, or are they about equal?

IIRC, a 4e Bestiary has never been in active development. It was on the wish list for a long time, but they never got a proposal for it they liked.

Oh, OK. I'd read somewhere that the 4e Bestiary was in development when GURPS 4 was in development. Yet another instance of Random Blogger is Wronger Syndrome. :)

(I wish there were a full-time GURPS historian somewhere.)

(Actually, I'd like that job.)

Then there's the curious case of Girl Genius which seems to have stalled, or at least encountered turbulence.

Perhaps they got that idea from GURPS Dragons. It was a hybrid 3e/4e book. Written mostly as a 3e hardback with a section at the end with 4e stats.

That's probably it. People get confused. It's even happened to me once or twice!

All sorts of ideas were rattling around at the dawn of 4e, before the print schedule ambitions got radically dialed back. To be fair to the random blogger, a Bestiary was probably mentioned and may even have had some outline ideas thrown around at some point.

Aha! I re-found the blog where I read that about a 4e Bestiary. The random blogger is K. David Ladage, and the blog post is The Future of GURPS. Here are the relevant bits:

Quote:
GURPS Bestiary had its play test announcement on 22 August.
Quote:
GURPS Bestiary Disappears

GURPS Bestiary was announced while the GURPS Basic Set was just being released. In December -- four months later -- the play test seemed to be having trouble. The Basic Set sold out of its initial print run, so the system was doing well (even though the GURPS Online project was cancelled about this time).

The Basic Set devotes one-third of the space to animals as it does to magic. The GURPS 3e Bestiary was a relatively popular book. It went through multiple printings and revisions, it spawned several side-books (Space Bestiary, Fantasy Bestiary, Creatures of the Night, Dragons, etc.). Many -- myself included -- feel that a Role Playing System without a good manual of monsters is incomplete.

What was promised was a book that gave stats for real-world creatures, and rules for how to create interesting monsters, variations, and such -- all while keeping in mind the creature's role in its ecology and environment. What we got was nothing.

In the decade since GURPS 4th edition was released, no Bestiary has ever been produced. This was the first of many realizations that GURPS was not going to live up to the promise.
Interesting that he has an actual date for the announcement of a playtest of the 4e Bestiary.

I'm not quite sure GURPS ever had the capacity to bring in new people - it seems like you're either wired for it or not.

Those books can help make sure these people discover it, though.
