ISWAT Hiring Limitations
Given some of the more infamous employees of ISWAT (i.e. the sociopathic, hypercapitalistic, ex-gigolo to an evil sorceress, vampire supergenius -- wanted by the Cabal...), what won't ISWAT consider hiring?

Baron Janos is hardly a "model employee" but he has unique talents and information which Infinity Patrol can use. In a way, he's not unlike some of the less savory Nazi rocket scientists and intelligence operatives that the U.S. recruited after WW2. Even so, I'm sure that Infinity Patrol has plenty of internal security "minders" to keep control over the more "flamboyant" ISWAT agents. I'd also imagine that some agents are more trusted than others, and that ISWAT administrators think very carefully before assigning loose cannons like C31R07, Baron Janos, Dai Blackthorn or Iotha to a mission. |

Let's look at it from the point of view of an ISWAT internal security officer: C31: Walked away from two previous "employers", driven by a somewhat unusual philosophy, lots of powerful built-in weaponry, powered by explosive radioactive power unit, non-human, unknown origins and background, unknown programming, long-term loyalty to Homeline unknown. Dai: Career criminal, driven by greed and thrill-seeking, show-off, unusual and powerful psi power is difficult to monitor, might harbor a grudge against ISWAT because they wouldn't let him bring all his loot from Yrth, non-Homeliner, unknown origins and background, long-term loyalty to Homeline unknown. Iotha: Non-human perception of time and aging, driven by thrill-seeking, non-human, can easily identify natural gates to other worlds possibly allowing her to leave Homeline at will without agency supervision, lots of world jumping experience before joining ISWAT meaning she could be an agent for some other parallel or meaning that she could have emotional attachments to non-Homeline worlds, unknown origin and background, long-term loyalty to Homeline unknown. In a real-life espionage or military organization, these sorts of people are "cut outs" - assets to be used in very special situations under close supervision of reliable operatives. Although it's much more fun for gaming, no sane exploration, military or spy agency would let half a dozen adventurers with unknown backgrounds, unknown loyalties and potentially crippling disadvantages undertake critically important missions. As for the rest: Louis: Came to Homeline by impersonating a slain I-Cops agent, background unverifiable, overconfident daredevil with a compulsive gambling problem, loyalties ultimately rest with the French empire culture of the Cyrano parallel. Prof. Headley: Claims he came to Homeline from Taft-7 - an otherwise abandoned "hell world," claims to be the only survivor of an attack which wiped out most of an I-Cops expedition and drove the two survivors mad, obsessed with combatting supernatural monsters, unknown background, wierdness magnet, shows signs of moderately severe PTSD, ability to create gates allows him to leave Homeline at will. Sora: Unknown background, connections to underworld, known vigilante who has committed multiple murders to avenge a personal vendetta, mildly delusional thinking. Baron Janos: Incredibly dangerous and amoral, unknown history, brings unwanted scrutiny from the Cabal, obviously power hungry. Should be sent to Coventry ASAP. Contingencies should also be made to eliminate him should he attempt to leave Coventry or take control of its power structures. Xing La: Unnown origins, Hearing problems, Unusual biochemistry, severe social problems, poor adaptability. Realistically, ISWAT would want to choose and train its own people and they'd look a whole lot like Special Ops troops. If ISWAT had to use outsiders, they'd be used individually under the supervision of carefully vetted "handlers" to insure the asset's reliability. Furthermore, the "specialist" would be surrounded by hardened ISWAT commandos, and at least one of those commandos would have standing order to kill the asset if they endangered the mission or attempted to betray Homeline. |
