Re: Gaming Ballistic - Posts other than GURPS (PotG)
We pick up being chased by a flesh golem, and we decide on barbecue, and fire the underground dungeon. Afterwards, we have a shopping trip and stack up on some nice magic items. Then we take the wet road to the major cit of Modron, home of Carmina the Elder of Mitra.
Good roleplaying, lots of exposition and backstory on the world and the goings-on within.

Want to convert real-world guns into D&D damage? Here's a hack at it, coarse as it may be.

Re: Gaming Ballistic - Posts other than GURPS (PotG)
Is this ft/lbs or J?
If it is J, and I understand how to do a log base 5 correctly (a perilous thought), I get 2d8 for a 545 J 7.63x25mm Mauser, or 2d6+3 for a 402 ft/lb if its ft/lbs For a 2 bore rifle, of 17,500 ft/lbs (23,700 J), we get 2d12 or 2d12+1 |

It's Joules, and 585J gives 2d8, so 545 should also. At 23,700J, yeah, I get 25 points, or 2d12+1.

Re: Gaming Ballistic - Posts other than GURPS (PotG)
Does DnD have some manner of MinST? And how brutal are there encumbrance rules? (my apologies if you covered this already, I don't think you have, if you have could you tell me where I could go look?)
The balancing I remember from DnD 3e is 'Melee weapons hit harder than ranged weapons (2d12 for two handed sword vs 1d8 for 2 handed bow) and ranged weapons need 2 stats to be effective (Dex for 'to hit' and Str for 'damage') while Melee weapons only need Str), in d20 Modern ranged weapons were balanced largely due to the most ranged focused class (Fast Hero) getting Cleric BAB while the most melee focused (Strong Hero) got Fighter BAB The idea of using Dex for both Damage and To Hit seems really really weird . . . I can't think of any system offhand that does that (though I can think of some systems where Dex yields Margin of Hitting and Margin of Hitting yields mods to damage I guess) What balances different guns in DnD? In GURPS, more hurtful guns tend to have Higher Weight (and GURPS encumbrance is brutal) and higher Recoil (which means you can often do more damage by hitting people more with a less hurtful gun) Hmmm, actually, I really rarely get to see the high hurtful, high recoil guns used much in GURPS . . . . low Rcl, high RoF weapons seem to be what I see used most often, because of a couple different opponent types 1. Easy to hit, high HP, low DR targets . . . . these targets are best to pour fire into and rack up the damage by sheer number of hits (say an elephant) 2. High defense skill targets . . . . these targets are best to defeat by trying to get at least some hits by getting enough potential hits on a high RoF attack to beat their dodge score Clearly I need to run into more high DR targets, that really warrant hammering away with the bigger weapons So whats the DnD reason to desire say an M16 over a Browning M2HB? |

Re: Gaming Ballistic - Posts other than GURPS (PotG)
We pick up a new character to the party, and the bunch of us set out to find Mori the dragon's home, to return Maud. The journey's the thing, and we hit the orc- infested former elflands where Mori has hung her hat. We get into a tussle with a pair of displacer beasts, and are about to go toe to toe with an unknown evil. Good game.

We start, and finish, in one giant combat. At the end, we manage to figure out the trick of this fey-inhabited villa. A very productive - and highly lucrative - session.

A really excellent session for D&D5e in Rob Conley's Majestic Wilderlands. Lots of fast combat, a dragon, a hedge maze full of highly flammable monsters, and a pretty nasty reveal at the end. Or so we think

Re: Gaming Ballistic - Posts other than GURPS (PotG)
I mull over whether or not I've been missing some key bits while playing my paladin in the weekly D&D5 campaign. Initially I thought I'd gotten it wrong, but on closer reading, I don't think so. Still, this is a thorough breakdown of what a 6th level D&D5 paladin can do.

I discovered the ForgedAnvil character generator over the last day or so. It's astounding.
