if you consider how half of the history book call the political structures of the world before the french revolution ancien régime, and that ancient can be used in reference of that, i think it's one of the options.
i agree with you, though, that "ancient", in english, has a distincive pre medieval feeling.

how about the "Early tech" you yourself suggested later?

Actually it can be argued with D20 D&D became more like GURPS.

Feats = Advatages
Flaws = Disdvatages.
Skill Points = points in Skills.

I agree. D&D is sowly moving to a more open system like Gurps. D20 is a very weak attempt at universalizing thier system.

To a degree, sure. But, again, I'd argue that if that is their goal they're not doing a very good job. I'd suggest that both games are doing what all games should attempt to do! Add good ideas from various sources in such a way that it makes what are you better, without making it worse or detracting from the core elements that are important in your design.

To fit with Ultra-Tech they should really call it Infra-Tech.
