Just out of curiosity, are people using a grid with minis? For me, part of the reason to use minis is you don't need a grid then.

I knew throwing in reality would cause issues!!!

I'm sticking with the tournament rules - measurement equals firing action.

I've never used a grid for any mini-game I've ever done. Maybe Star Fleet Battles, but only because SFB uses a hex map for its minis game.

With some board & computer games , it helps people with certain problems focus & not get overwhelmed by sensory input .

Swordboy & his younger Son are like me both on the Autism Spectrum . Both 'suffer' if a a regularly spaced map is not used in table top games - Car Wars , OGRE , various Labyrinth games etc .

Having played WarHammer 40K & BattleFleet Gothic , I'm fine with non regular spaced playing fields - despite my mild Aspergers . Computer games like Master of Orion 2 among others , I always use grid option to stop feeling overwhelmed by the wide open maps during Space Ship Combat .

Each to their own I guess ?

I am aspergers too and it slightly unnerves me when I play CW without a grid, but that is probably because when my "car wars subroutine" was first programmed it needed the grid as there was no turning key.

I have just put the next map for our play by facebook game out and used an image from google maps, but it looks wrong without a grid.

Without a grid, how do you steal some movement by "evening out" ;)

I will say that Car Wars made me REALLY good at the Pythagorean theorem.

"He's 5 inches ahead of me and 4 to the right, so the range is between 6 and 7. Mod is -1, fire."

Ah yes I never thought of that really . I was always good at Pythagoras even before I used it with Car Wars .
Helped me pass my Basic Certificate in Mathematics with 100% Score & using it in 3 Dimensions on the Certificate of Proficiency in Mathematics got me a Pass with Merit . Both at same time aged 12 - 1 year & 2 years early respectively ! ;-)
Before learning Pythagoras I 'only' got 85% on Basic Certificate at 11 years old .

We use it often in the 3-D Combat for Aeroduel etc , for bombing , ground to air & for firing ground attacks etc . AERODUEL Combat section fudges it quite a bit ...

As I've said before - especially to annoyed parents - 'THIS GAME IS EDUCATIONAL!' X-D

The amount of players who improved their Maths just to play Car Wars and their Vehicular design capabilities at my Boarding School was amazing .

In the era of 'Lasers Everywhere' and the new Laser Reflective Armour in the mid '80's it was required with the charts & tables in Deluxe Car Wars ...

Not only do I still use gridded maps, I also use cardboard 1" counters.

Now get off my lawn!
