Do you think it would be worthwhile to add a section on social rolls? I've been using the social aspects of GURPS more lately, and wondered if a section on reaction rolls, influence rolls, and social skills (fast-talk, etc.) might be of interest to enough people to include it.
Thanks, GM Joe. Reaction/influence rolls don't crop up much in our games, so they tend to float to my backburner, but that's a good suggestion.

That explains part of why How to Be a GURPS GM felt oddly incomplete to me. My games commonly have a huge amount of social interaction and use various sorts of social mechanics a lot. I wasn't expecting a shorter version of Social Engineering but I did think there would be a bit more about character interaction. But if you rarely use them I can see they wouldn't be at the front of your mind.

It wasn't a hole I was even aware of until reading "Social Engineering" and realizing, "Ohh..."

I can see that that wouldn't be as helpful for the example, but on the other hand I'm not sure the chance of missing the snake should be that high, either.

Fourth post has arrived! Your First Influence Rolls.

Today was originally scheduled for "Your First Melee Combat," but I wanted to get something in there on influence rolls, and didn't want to have to skip 'backwards' from the way subjects are ordered in both Lite and Basic.

Next week, we'll get to smack somebody.

Just a note to say that the "New to GURPS" series hasn't gone anywhere, I've just finally decided that Wednesday is my most convenient day for posting.

So... see ya in a couple of days for Rex's first blooding!

The time for combat has arrived! Your First Melee Combat has been posted. Come see if Rex gets his head wrecked or not.

Please, please, let me know if you notice any errors in this one. Guide for newbies isn't much good if it gets things wrong.

Enjoy!

I don't think it's really right to say "the second turn is over." Rex has a second turn and Bart has a second turn, but there's not an overall second turn. The different turns overlap. For example, if Bart tries an all-out attack (Strong) on his second turn, then he has no defense, and he still has no defense when Rex attacks on Rex's third turn—the defense only comes back on Bart's third turn. There is no overall third turn, either.

This is a small point, but it could lead to confusion, so I think it's important to state it exactly at the outset.
