"Surgery defaults to Surgery-12"

Post-Apocalyptic Europe. My character is captured by a marauding gang that has found shelter in an old building. My character survives being captured by pretending to be a doctor (and I think I am being so clever). Turns out they have a wounded team-mate on the second floor of the building and they want my character to perform surgery on him.

Turns out Surgery defaults to First Aid-12 (and that is before equipment modifiers and so on) ...

Needless to say the patient did not survive the surgery and my character managed to fail all his Fright Checks - and that was before the rest of the player characters opened fire on the building using an old 40mm Anti Aircraft-gun.

Sadly they thought the gang was hiding on the second floor of the building (and not the first floor where the gang had retreated to to avoid listening to their wounded team-mate's desperate mad screams of pain during the surgery).

By pure luck my character survived but he was deeply traumatised by the experience for the rest of the campaign.

And in American English, first floor and ground floor are synonyms so that could lead to separated by a common language situations.

GM: GURPS is too complicated, I'm switching back to running D&D*...

ME: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

* For real terror replace with "Rifts", or any other Palladium game.

(after listening to the player's plan)

"Haaaaaaa! Haaaaaa!" (Falls off chair laughing)

So the players made it work.

Hah. I'm always the GM and I'm currently DMing a D&D adventure and I swear it's giving me a rash. I can't handle all the hand-wavery. It's like they just want me to make **** up.

You'd be surprised! Many if not most medical professionals are switching (and a lot have already switched) to nitrile rubber gloves, thanks to its much lower allergenicity and much higher durability than latex.
