Run the XP table per stat
So for humans this goes:
Stat up to 10: 100XP 14th stat point: 1,000 XP 20th stat point: 64k XP And so on. This way wizards dump ST in order to save a few hundred XPs rather than millions of XPs. Other races would be offset by their base so Goblins would pay two steps higher up for ST and two steps down for IQ. Reptile Folk shine at adding on extra ST, and so on.

Re: Run the XP table per stat
My favorite house rule variant idea for XP is to charge based on how much you raise your stats over their initial value. Your suggestion will naturally lead to characters with nearly equal values in all stats, which I think drains a bit of color out of the world, whereas mine would have extreme choices at character creation continue to reverberate as characters progress (your young Hercules will still stand out later in life among seasoned veterans). I haven't implemented this, mostly because I'm trying to exercise some discipline about LE so my campaign doesn't spin off into the stratosphere while new materials are still coming out. But I think this would be a fun approach.

Re: Run the XP table per stat
Yeah, as I've written many times, I think I liked Steve's first draft of a new XP roll best, which had a curved table per stat, and then capped the max total at 40 (which part I might stretch a little).
I agree with Lars that it works even better if each character has their own starting point, as well. And one way of doing that is as he suggested, using their starting values for their stats. That way if you start strong, you can increase your ST more easily than if you started weak. The house rule version I've been using for a while has the base stat for the curve be the racial starting point, plus 0 to 4 discretionary points per individual. So for a typical 32-point hero-material PC, that means 4 of their discretionary points affect their XP curves, and 4 of them don't. I think this is a pretty sweet mix of taking into account racial differences, and letting characters have consistent individual strengths. |
