Munchkin Missions
Lots of games seem to give each player his/her own set of missions/quests to complete in addition to the main objective of the game. I was wondering if anyone was interested in also brainstorming on that idea. What if each player was given one (or several) munchkin missions to accomplish before being allowed to fight the Boss? Some mission ideas include:
1. Search at least 3 rooms until they are Looted Out. 2. Beat (without dispelling or avoiding) a monster without rolling dice. 3. Run Away successfully from a monster that is at least 5 levels less than you. 4. Explore a room that is at least 4 tiles away from the Entrance in a straight line. 5. Beat a monster that you have enhanced with a potion, scroll, or DxM card. 6. Use at least 3 different Race or Class advantages or disadvantages. 7. Beat a monster unarmed (no head, armor, footgear, nor hands). 8. Beat at least 1 monster of each color. 9. Gain 2 levels by only discarding items--they do not have to happen on the same turn. 10. Get help when you don't need it, and give all the treasure to the helper. 11. Beat a monster that has defeated a player before. 12. Intentionally take the Bad Stuff from a monster (or intentionally take the hit if the Bad Stuff doesn't apply to you). Anyone else wanna add some ideas? |

I thought of submitting something like this to The Great Unknown, but never did. My idea for completting a sidebar quest, was ‘you get some kind of bonus’. Something like a bonus you get with a Promo item (card, t-shirt, water, black die, etc). Pat

I'm also wary of ones which require you to bend the rules. For #2, for example, I can think of a couple of interpretations here: 1) You have to defeat it in a way that doesn't involve actually rolling in combat (Snickersnee vs the clowns); seems awfully limited 2) Win a combat without rolling the dice; not actually possible, you have to roll the dice. Now, if you changed it to "Win a combat by enough that the die rolls won't make a difference (even if they rolled all 6s and you rolled all 1s, you'd win)", then that's more like it. It is, however, not much of a fight. |

Re: Munchkin Missions
Your rewording of #2 is definitely better. That was what was originally intended, but now it's a lot clearer.
Maybe #10 could allow for an alternative action in the case where no helper is willing--such as, beat a monster and drop the treasure in that room and leave the room. |

Re: Munchkin Missions
What if the quests are known only to you, and you only revealed it once you complete it?
Say there is a bunch of these side-quests.. and at the start of a game everybody gets one or two quests each (randomly drawn). Once you complete one you get a new (hidden) one. |

Re: Munchkin Missions
The rewards for these side quests would have to be something worth getting, too. If it were just a treasure, or 500 gold or something similar, I might just ignore them in the average game; but if each completed side quest gave you, say, an extra die in a combat(tokens could be given out to represent a completed mission, then redeemed in combat), that would be something. saving an extra die roll or 2 for the boss fight would make me want to do side quests...

Re: Munchkin Missions
Ooo, extra die in combat sounds nice.
Right now my group has required every player to roll for 3 different missions: a Combat mission, a Teamwork mission, and a Dungeon mission. Here's the table we use: Combat Missions (roll a d10): 1. Run Away successfully from a monster that is at least 5 levels less than you. 2. Beat a monster that you have enhanced with a potion, scroll, or DxM card. 3. Beat a monster unarmed (no head, armor, footgear, nor hands). 4. Beat a monster with just item bonuses (no class, race, dice, nor level bonuses). 5. Beat at least 1 monster of each color. 6. Beat (without dispelling or avoiding) a monster without rolling dice. 7. Beat a monster that has defeated a player before. 8. Intentionally fail to Run Away from a combat, taking the Bad Stuff. 9. Use a Curse on yourself when you are in combat and beat the monster. 10. Beat a combat that involves more than 1 monster. Teamwork Missions (roll a d6): 1. Help another munchkin’s combat without gaining anything for it (levels, items, favors, etc.). 2. Get help when you don’t need it and give all the treasure to the helper. 3. Search a room that another munchkin is in, and let him choose 1 item from what you gained. 4. Use a one-shot item or class power to benefit a munchkin that is in a combat without you. 5. Help a munchkin or get help from a munchkin to defeat a Fearsome monster. 6. Give a non-one-shot item to another munchkin who can use it for free. Dungeon Missions (roll a d6): 1. Search a Ransacked room until it is Looted Out. 2. Explore a room that is at least 4 tiles away from the Entrance in a straight line. 3. Move into 3 different rooms in a single turn. 4. Use at least 3 different Race or Class advantages or disadvantages. 5. Gain 2 levels by only discarding items--they do not have to happen on the same turn. 6. Get to level 8 by only beating monsters—not purchasing levels. You must declare your Mission accomplished immediately (before taking any other action). You cannot fight the Boss until you have completed all your Missions. You cannot accomplish more than 1 Mission per turn. Teamwork missions that require you to give treasure to another munchkin are still completed even if the other munchkin refuses the treasure. 'Beating' or 'killing' a monster is meant to say defeating a monster in combat in such a way that you gain level(s) and treasure normally. |
