Default Playing time?

I am about to play my first games this weekend and one of the players has limited time to join us (leaving early). In others' experience, how long does a game take?

I've finished games in anywhere from 45 minutes to 4 hours.

For at least your first game or two, this game can run anywhere from 3 or more hours (so, far this has been my experience).

If your worried about time constraints, you can always limit starting move and start everyone at a higher level. A good way to do this is everyone starts at level 5 with only 2 move (of course you have to lower hidden door and locked door costs down to 2). This thread mentions this strategy.

And this thread has a strategy for speeding up the first round. Basically just lowering the starting move to 1 move for the first round.

But once you get the hang of the game it should speed up a lot.

That is not mentioned in the strategy you linked to, and is basically unnecessary. As was stated elsewhere and is stated in the rules: You can use ALL of your starting move in a turn to go through any exit, even if your move is 0.

I know its not mentioned in the strategy I linked to, I just wanted to add it to clarify a bit. But then again I had forgotten it was a part of the official rules.

Good thing you mentioned it though, just goes to show I need to re-read the rules once again. My first official demo of MQ is next Thursday and I want it to run as smooth as possible. I will diffently be reading the rules a couple more times this weekend.

Too late for an answer for your game, but for future reference, just so it's in writing...

When we were at the end of playtest, with players who knew what they were doing, we could generally finish a game in 30 minutes per player + about 30 min. I played in two or three 2 player games that went about an hour, and we had a few 4 player games get close to 3 hours.
