Default Triplanetary ship?

Why would any space navy build a Corvette when the Packet (armed merchant) costs 1/2 as much and can carry 10x the cargo (ordnance)? The corvette can't even carry a single mine, what's the point of giving it 5 cargo? Is this a mistake? Should these be reversed, but that wouldn't make sense either.

Just some things that make me go 'hmm'.

Marc Miller's hex based vectored movement system is brilliant. I am very excited about this game and wish I could have joined the KS campaign. Thanks for making it happen Steve and team.

Triplanetary should not be taken as a fully-developed universe. It's really an abstract game, and its selection of ships and scenarios shouldn't be taken as any sort of "canon."

Those ships "shine" in different scenarios. I did not want to mess very much with the original ship designs, too!

Yeah, I've always viewed each scenario as being its own "universe."

Since packet ships aren't military, they can't perform an overload maneuver (two-hexes delta-V instead of one, a single time before your next maintenance stop).

Also, their cargo capacity is for actual cargo, not ordnance.

I must have missed that on my read through of the rules. I looked for it as I too thought that would be a reasonable restriction. It does say that "only warships can launch torpedoes" also "non warships may only carry one nuke at a time". Additionally, the packet can be both military and civilian. I imagine these being akin to either armed merchants or possibly "Q" ships.

Also they only carry 10 fuel which is a pretty limiting amount to conduct offensive combat operations with.

Thinking of each scenario as its 'own universe" was helpful.

thanks guys

The rules don't explicitly say that packets can't drop ordnance, but I imagine in most scenarios they will be hauling freight. Unless, like you said, there is a Q-ship in a scenario.
