Default What does 1 point of burn damage look like?

What does 1 point of injury due to burn damage look like? What about 2? 3? 4?

I invoke the collective brilliance of the GURPS forum community. I ask because I'm thinking about how much phaser burn to link to the stun settings in my Star Trek game. I was coming up with something like this - I was going to have special dice made:

PHASER BURN DICE
UT Raw: 1d-3 for TL9 Electrolasers, except for Heavy Rifle which is 1d-2.
So 0,0,0,1,2,3 and 0,0,1,2,3,4. Or 50% 3 max and 67% 4 max.

Idea for an 8-sided did:
BCS RoF 3: HT-4 sec stunned - 0,0,0,1,1,0,0,0 burn when choosing RoF 1
STN RoF 1: HT-2 min unconscious - 0,0,0,1,1,2,0,0 burn
HVY RoF 1: HT-3 min unconscious - 0,0,0,1,1,2,3,0 or 50% 3 max burn
MAX RoF 1: HT-4 min unconscious - 0,0,0,1,1,2,3,4 or 62.5% 4 max burn

So, an 8-sided die: blank,blank,blank,1,1,2,3,4
BCS does 1 pt of damage based on rolling RoF or less (except holdout phaser always does 0 pts.)
Stun does damage as rolled, ignoring results greater than the HT penalty.

But then I got to thinking, do I really want my Type-2 Star Trek hand phasers, with their HVY stun setting, potentially doing 3 points of burn damage? Is that just too much?

I'd say once you reach actual points of damage you're doing blister damage. So, 1 point? 2nd degree burn.

But this might also be dependent on how many HP the recipient has, as 1HP damage on a limb of a small creature might be enough to cripple it, which is far more critical than a '2nd degree burn'.

Well, smack yourself with a torch, and tell me how it looks =)

That's a point of burn damage IIRC.

Given that 5 points of injury will cripple a normal mans limb, 3 points of burn is a significant injury that would be at lest at the cusp between 2nd and 3rd degree burns.

But then again, according to The Undiscovered County, at close range a heavy stun to the head can kill.

Remember, 60 such burns guarantee the death of an average man so if it's too small a burn for that many of that size to do so they're 0-HP burns.

The important thing with burns is surface area more than depth. You could probably get a decent approximation by saying that a burn over 1% of body surface counts as 1 point of damage. That would be either hand, either foot, the groin, or a significant fraction of the face—though those areas are more sensitive and realistically should count double. Get up past 50% of the body surface burned and survival is certainly at serious risk, though modern medicine may be able to keep you from dying with intensive care.

Maybe I could give the burn damage a (0.5) armor divisor.

Then the max injury for HVY stun would be 3 to an eyeball, 2 to bare skin, and 1 to skin under clothing.

Thanks for all the comments so far. They've all been helpful.

In reality, age is by far the most important factor in surviving serious burns. Surface area burn percentages that have little chance to kill a healthy child is sure death for even a super healthy 40 year old.

I only know that image from those referencing a good verbal "burn".
I guess I frequent Imgur and internet meme sites too much.
