Default played cards returned to hand

In this thread, MM says

"If a player with Ranger character discards a number of cards equal to the number of Treasures on the Monster card, he gets the UNMODIFIED monster as a Steed. All enhancers and one-shot Items thrown to aid the Monster go back to the people who played them."

This struck me as kind of unusual. Either that, or I have some big misunderstandings about the game. I mean, if a monster is charmed or pollymorphed etc., the enhancers that were on it do not go back to the people who played them, they are just discarded, correct?

So, besides taming, is there any other instance where a card played would be returned to the person who played it when the target became ineligible?

Well, sure.

But the taming description on the ranger's card doesn't mention this, and the rules for both M4 and M5 don't either. I would not have assumed it and did not know about it until I read MM's post. So I am asking are there any other places where you get played cards back that are NOT OTHERWISE INDICATED.

Letter-of-the-rule. Monsters that are polymorphed are discarded as if defeated, modifiers go with them. Only in special exceptions such as this and Switcharoo are modifiers returned.
