I've been trying to work out some religious rank titles, so perhaps this will help both of us:

Religious Rank of Yrth Church Officials (Banestorm p184)

Rank Title

6 Archbishop, grand master of a great order
5 Bishop, grand master of a lesser order
4 Head of a powerful abbey or minor order
3 Head of a minor abbey
2 Senior priests
1 Common priests
0 Extremely minor local priests

Religious Rank (Catholic, preliminary)

Rank Title

8 The Pope
7 Cardinal, especially respected archbishop?
6 Archbishop, grand master of a great order
5 Bishop, grand master of a lesser order
4 Head of a powerful abbey or minor order
3 Head of a minor abbey
2 Senior priests, priors/prioresses
1 Common priests, respected monks, nuns, and friars
0 Extremely minor local priests; monks, nuns, and friars

Where do Canons, deacons, and other odd titles go?

Religious Rank (Anglican, preliminary)

Rank Title

8 Supreme Govenor
7 Primate
6 Archbishop, grand master of a great order
5 Bishop, grand master of a lesser order
4 Head of a powerful abbey or minor order
3 Head of a minor abbey
2 Senior priests
1 Common priests
0 Extremely minor local priests

Where do Canons, deacons, and other odd titles go?

Does the CoE even *have* abbeys anymore?

Examples, not exhaustive.

Feudal (English)

The grades during all but the last century of the mediaeval were:
  • Landed knight (sire)
  • Baron (munsire)
  • Earl
  • King

Aristocratic (English)
  • Baronet
  • Baron
  • Viscount
  • Earl
  • Marquess
  • Duke
  • King

French Feudal
  • Gentilhomme
  • Chevalier
  • Baron/seigneur/captal etc.
  • Vicomte
  • Comte
  • Marquis
  • Duc
  • Roi

German, late pseudo-feudal
  • Ritter
  • Freiherr
  • Burggraf
  • Landgraf
  • Markgraf
  • Herzog
  • Fürst (even later, König)
  • Kaiser

That's a drastic and probably erroneous simplification of a complicated system consisting mostly of special cases.

Military (Renaissance or Enlightenment)
  • Sergeant-Major
  • Lieutenant
  • Captain
  • Major (originally sergeant-major of the column)
  • Lieutenant-colonel (originally lieutenant of the column)
  • Colonel (originally captain of the column)
  • [Sergeant] Major-general
  • Lieutenant-general
  • [Captain-] General

That is, you have a captain, his lieutenant, and a sergeant-major commanding at the company, column, and general (army) level.

Police
  • Constable (several grades)
  • Sergeant (often several grades)
  • Inspector
  • Chief Inspector
  • Superintendant
  • Chief Superintendant
  • Assistant Chief Constable, Assistant Commissioner, or Commander
  • Deputy chief Constable, or Deputy Commissioner
  • Commissioner of Police, or Chief Constable

Religious (Catholic, mostly)
  • Rector, or canon
  • Rural dean, archpriest, archdeacon, or dean
  • Suffragan Bishop
  • Diocesan Bishop
  • Metropolitan bishop
  • Primate
  • Patriarch
  • Pope

Government (Westminster System)
  • Supervisor
  • Branch Head
  • Assistant Secretary
  • First Assistant Secretary
  • Secretary
  • Minister
  • Prime Minister

Is that the sort of thing you wanted?
