I'd thought about engraving... I know its quite time consuming and I've read stories about how Braille made it much easier to write books for the blind. using echolocation might read engraving better.
Cuneiform is a great suggestion. Its heavy, but its very tactile. And very evocative. And its almost braille-like itself, just adding direction. The knotted string language is a great suggestion as well. Its probably harder to write on, but we're spoiled today anyways. Just had the thought that applying some sort of slick glue on a surface with a paintbrush might work for an especially tactile race. less so for the echolocators, I think.
