Default Car Wars Setting

Is the setting updated as well? I mean are the cars still electric and escorting convoys from fortress town to fortress town protecting them from motorcycle marauders?

Core world concepts are unchanged. Details may be different, but we've not explored much of the game world at this time. All of our focus is on playing the game at the table with friends. If this project does well, we'll no doubt expand on ideas in the future.

Please don't invalidate the setting! I get that you might want to fudge some dates, as some of the pivotal moments in the CW timeline are now in the past but some of us have all that old stuff and really do love it.

I am also a big fan of the setting. Back in the day, we played GURPS Autoduel as much as arena Car Wars battles.

From the Kickstarter home page:
Quote:
North America, 2069 CE. It’s a new American frontier. The collapse of the U.S. government plunged the country back into the good old days — days of wilderness lawlessness, banditry, regional dictators, and of the men and women who combat them. Modern-day knights and gunslingers are in demand; but the automobile has replaced the horse, and the machine-gun and recoilless rifle have made the sword and Winchester obsolete.

Welcome to 2069. It’s a rough world, but it’s the only one around…
Note that the tradition of the Car Wars universe being n+50 continues!

2069 is also iconic date as it's 200th Anniversary of 'Golden Spike' completion of the Trans Continental Railway .
In fact there was a SJG project called Car Wars: Golden Spike mentioned on page 2 'The Driver's Seat' , of ADQ 9/4 Winter 2042 (1992) . It was to include rules for heavy transport vehicles - Cargo Ships (and escort Subs) , full sized (200 Ton+ ?) Transport Aircraft & Armoured Trains etc .
Unfortunately it seems to have come to not much apart from a few webpages & stuff on NOVA's website for Super Trucks (industrial Dumper Trucks & similar) and Naval Wars .

After playing the game for 37+ years , that '50 Years into the Future is soon running out ! X-D

That is actually a return to basics, and maybe how I will frame the setting for new players.

I just checked my 3rd Edition (1983) and its “Introduction: a brief chronology” starts out with “Fifteen years ago: The Food Riots.” CWC has that canonical year as 2016.

The first year listed in CWC (1990) chronology is 2000 and the seminal event is the “Federal government moves to nationalize dwindling supplies of oil and natural gas production.” A reboot adding an even 30 years to that timeline could work easily enough.

Note that the published CWC chronology between 2030 and 2040 is pretty uneventful, even thought that is the Golden Age for autodueling! I would like to get those ten years back for the sake of a campaign. Nothing has happened at all in the CWC universe since then, so that’s another two decades for poaching.

In summary, I think I will use the CWC chronology but adding 30 years to each of the given dates. So The Food Riots were about 25 years ago (2046), and it is the year 2069 now (eve of 2070), just like the KS page says. Ideally, I would reset to 2059 (but stick with adding 30 years to the CWC chronology), as that would put ADQ (2063) in the near future (instead of ~seven years past) and harmonize with the 3rd Edition opening (which could then be used as-is).

I prefer the "alternate history" approach -- CW-time diverges from Reality-time in 2000.

That will be a Good Idea for example in 2030 Federal government moves to nationalize dwindling supplies of oil and natural gas production. Legislatures in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana react by seceding, and move to nationalize these resources themselves. Pitched battles with federal forces follow, resulting in the destruction of several oilfield sites on both sides of the newly-established border.

Then In 2033: U.S. forces stopped in the hills of central Texas, ending bloody "Gulf or Bust" campaign. Rebel forces begin to retake lost territory.

And So On, etc.
