Default Knowing Your Own Strength and Bending Steel Bars

I'm a huge fan of KYOS from Alternate GURPS IV (Pyramid #3/83), but how can one integrate it with the rules for bending steel bars from Supers p.101? Are we even supposed to?

What I mean is this: Using KYOS, a character with (Lifting) ST 40 can two-handed lift (BLx8) 80 tons. Using the regular rules, you'd need (Lifting) ST ~316 to achieve the same feat. With that kind of (Lifting) ST, the character can easily twist steel bars into pretzel shapes. But with (Lifting) ST 40, the character couldn't hope to even slightly bend a 1" steel bar, even though he can clearly apply force that a 1" steel bar cannot possibly bear.

How should one resolve this? Simply look up the required Lifting (ST) in the regular ST tables and assume that value for the Quick Contest agaist the object's DR and HP/HT, as I did above? Did I overlook some rules?

I can tell you that I have never looked at KYOS. I certainly was not relying on it when I wrote the rules in Supers; I'm not sure if it had even come out then. The rules in Supers were meant to emulate the more than cinematic genre of four-color super heroes; they don't necessarily work in a realistic genre where ordinary mortals don't bend steel bars.

Knowing Your Own Strength is a great set of rules and I would use them for any Supers game. That said the article is incomplete in that it does not cover all the ramifications and I would dearly lover a supplement or secondary article to address that.

For bending bars I would treat it as a contest of Strength not damage. Lifting ST applies as if you were grappling.

KYOS really needs some integration with the damage rules, which it doesn't have.

I disagree, I built a comparison chart for a Supers campaign and I think damage is fine. Remember the article also adjusts costs for Striking ST.
Throwing things for damage needs some retooling.
Also you need charts or explicit formula for some items that need to revisited.

Collision rules in general need lots of retooling. We need a Grand/Gurps Unified Theory of Impacts. ;)

Quoted for truth.

According to GURPS Supers, bending bars already is a contest of ST minus the object's DR against the objects HP or HT.

Lots of super strong supers are dumb, but now I have the mental image of a really dumb Hulk knock-off punching the bars to get out.

Yep. Which is why I am hoping to see the Slam rules from DF sooner rather than later. That tidbit should not be left a DF only rule IMHO.
Assuming its not a setting specific simplification. However from the tease Kromm posted I think its supposed to be a significant improvement.

There are supposedly new slam rules in the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game but I haven't seen anything that says that they plan to also publish them as part of the GURPS Dungeon Fantasy line.
