The Gaze attack uses Innate Attack (Gaze). If we look at Adventurers p79, Innate Attack (Gaze) is DX/Easy.

Gaze requires you to be facing your target. It is most certainly possible to pin someone face down.

Ahhh. You're right. I was conflating a Perk out of another book.

Oh sure. But since the OP is looking for ways to keep this fight from being a "1-2-Out" fight, I'd be fine with the Gaze attack both being DX based and for Merle being able to just gaze attack until his sight is explicitly blocked.

Which, if nothing else is done to beef Merle up, means it's a 3 or 4 round fight, tops.

Not sure how effective Merle is intended to be. It's really not that hard for a damage optimized build to shred him.

I agree, which is why I said above: "Keep in mind, he's a scrub tier Boss meant to go out to a bunch 250 point guys."

I think the OP just wants him to last be a threat for more than 2 turns.

Merle is intended to be an anticlimax / pushover bathos moment as opposed to a real boss fight, yeah. My group snuck up, saw where he was, and then charged up an 18d6 explosive lightning-bolt and threw it at him, killing him before combat even began.

Clever move on your party's part (Perception 14 means the tactic isn't exactly a given without the right spells) but he doesn't seem that anti-climactic to me. Only 9 HP but Unkillable and DR 5, Hard to Subdue 6, MR 6 means he'll be around for awhile. HPT means he won't care about shock so he'll be a reasonable threat for the duration. Looks to me like he should last more than a couple of turns.

Merle is set up so that a group that doesn't bring any heavy-hitters can still deal with him, although it might be a bit of a slog. If your group has a bard, a thief, a cleric, and a wizard who went heavy on the utility spells, they can still handle him.

Any group that can handle the peshkali doesn't seem like it should have an issue with Merle.

Or the golems. Merle really is a bit of a push-over after those three beasties.
