Default Osprey Publishing wargames rules

I've noticed that over the past year that Osprey has gone from merely supporting historical wargaming to publishing rules for various rime periods -- including non-historical settings, such as the steampunk set I ordered today.

Has anyone tried any of Osprey's wargames? How did they play? Do they all (or most of them) use similar mechanics?

I've got "In Her Majesty's Name," rules for steampunky/VSF skirmishes with miniatures.

While I've not played them yet, the rules were very clear and concise. If you're looking for extremely detailed set-ups, you'll be disappointed. Forex, guns are set into general categories, but there are rules for walkers, which look pretty neat.

I have friends who own the various Fields of Glory sets, and they report that the games are fast and fun, but more generic than most of the other game sout there.

I only read a number of reviews, but those were pretty positive.

I talked to some wargamers who have bolt action, also published by Osprey, about it. They felt the game was a bit too generic.

Must be a trend.

For an introduction to miniatures gaming, generic is, I think, a good way to go. If you get hooked, you'll visit an online presence, like TMP, and discover that there may be hundreds of different rules sets available, depending upon your choice of era and scale.

Since Osprey has a wide availablity, the generic type games are great hooks.

Added: Bolt Action is actually published by Warlord Games, which produces both rules and miniatures.

Lack of detail is fine, to a point. For example, a rifle, pistol and mortar should not be the same. On the other hand, most WWII bolt-action rifles were basically the same performance-wise.

Aside from walkers, I saw there are rules for supernatural powers.

Like how Classic Traveller had 'revolver', 'shotgun' and 'rifle'? ;)

:) I read the reviews in Miniature Wargames, but I think magazine reviews tend to be on the positive side, generally speaking. Amazon reviews are more mixed, ime.

I've only read the Osprey Zombie book, which is basically a wargame without the wargame part; it was pretty nice. Not bad at all.

I bought that as a Kindle book last year, as it was at a special low price (by Osprey standards). The chapter on zombie masters actually mskes viral zombies interesting ;)
