Isn't that another plane of existence?

My campaign world took place on the prison planet. Set up by a galactic civilization, restricted tech knowledge and tech via various methods (not always successfully), and then the civilization entered the Long Night and the planet was left on its own.

Worked pretty well...

Few betters prisons than one that makes the prisoners stop caring about escaping...

...though, of course, Carceri has a limited form of imprisonment as part of its structure: "if you came involuntarily, you cannot leave until you are stronger than whoever sent you here."

Other prison planes in the D&D cosmology are the layer Belierin of Elysium (a prison used by the Powers of Good, and they are vigilant about keeping out intruders good or evil); Agathion of Pandemonium (closed pockets of rock containing vortices of air or vacuum); artificial pockets in the Paraelemental Plane of Ooze, a.k.a. the House of Chambered Madness (not natural to the plane; inhabitants are simply dumped there with survival magic to rot of boredom and disgust); and this and that ethereal demiplane with specialized local physical laws.

In D&D, yes (which is just a fancy term for another world/parallel/dimension/etc.).

Australia got prostitutes and pickpockets. Actually criminals they wanted to be rid of, but whom weren't all that serious in their crimes. But then Australia was an actual colony, not just a dumping ground. One likely alternative actually are political offenses. "The Emperor in his benevolence has decided that those of you who desire the archaic form of government known as "democracy" may be left alone to resurrect that ancient and impractical form of governance and learn its weaknesses for yourselves." Which, come to think of it, was exactly what Perry Rhodan did with his pro-democracy activists.

Here's a thought: I wonder how familiy visitation might work. Also, could the prison be co-ed?

A ringworld could also make a huge prison. See Halo...
Sans "The Flood", I honestly wouldn't mind living on Halo: Timberland, Death Island and Sidewinder all have lovely scenery. Is the landmass comparable to Earth?

Co-ed leads to an issue I mentioned earlier...

Ideal Prison planet.

Climate:
arid or maybe dense forest.
Creatures:
Anything that is big and like to chew on bad people.
Protection/defense:
Orbital Satallites with bad weapons on it. and hundreds of buoys 1AU away from the planet with a generic "you're too close, run away of be destroyed, restricted area" type warning. Front line a hundred patrol ships and a Space station that's the Warden's Office.
Prisoners:
Hardened multi offenders, murderer's and treasonous bastards

As for coed prisons. Sure but give them all mandatory sterilization. mainly because we don't want the're gene's to pass to another generation.

Other then that, anything goes.
