Default Murphy's Rules

In Cute Knight the way to learn how to pick locks is to take dance class.

I think my favorite was in Car Wars, where a pedestrian tripping over a curb had a 1-in-3 chance of being killed by the fall.

Then there's TWERPS Trek, in which a starship's speed is based upon the captain's Strength attribute.

I was unaware that Car Wars had rules for falling damage.

Thread moved to Roleplaying In General (no clue why it was in Geek Culture).

PS: Just to make sure y'all know that posting Murphy's here on the forums will not get them considered for inclusion (in Pyramid, or in future compilations) as official Murphy's Rules. For that, you need to email them to murphy@sjgames.com -- but if you're just posting 'em for the heck of it, feel free to carry on.

In GURPS 4th ed., Animal Empathy is required to Intimidate at a dog, e.g., by yelling at it. As a bonus, you can now Sex Appeal the dog.

Can we do video games?

In the DOS classic game Sopwith, mistakenly shooting a cow gives a bigger penalty than completely destroying your own base.

In Minecraft, wearing a brand new leather tunic, pants, and boots will get you 8.5 armor points. Add an almost worn out diamond helmet, and it will drop to as little as 3.

We can do whatever games we want.

And we can point out poorly-worded rules, too...

In GURPS, it is impossible to put a cover on a trap door unless one has the Camouflage skill. (GURPS Low-Tech, p. 119)

A recent one: when doing Suppressive Fire in Rogue Trader (and likely Dark Heresy too - not sure), the chance to hit any target in the suppressed zone is fixed, whether the zone contains one target, or is full of targets to the point of them being a living wall.

Picking on Minecraft isn't fair. It's just in beta and there are lots of fun things. For Example:
  • Armor will protect you from drowning damage and lose durability in the process.
  • Glass can hold back an unlimited amount of lava or water.
  • Doors can hold back the weight of the ocean wether or not they're closed.
  • Doors can also hold back lava.
  • You can carry lava in an iron bucket.
  • You can stack 64 cubic meters of building materials in a single inventory slot, but you can only have one pork chop (or tool) in an inventory slot.
  • Once dropped from a bucket, Lava or Water will propagate into an available area (yes, you can create air-water/lava falls with a little work).
  • Flaming arrows do not set flamible objects on fire.
I love Minecraft, but it's in Beta, let's not make too much fun of it.

In GURPS a person that looks at the full moon on a clear night only has a 50% chance of seeing it.

Like Dwarf Fortress I suspect it's always going to be in Beta.
