Rules Q: Specific Cards' Curse and Item interaction.
Hello readers, our group requests clarification/opinions on two cards' interaction. The munchkin game being played is Munchkin Nightmare Before Christmas.
Cards in regard: [What Is This?!] [Voodoo Doll] Edit: removed the specific text of the cards as, "We respectfully ask you not to quote card text here." What Is This?! is a (Curse) that targets a player to , put roughly, make them either suffer bad Stuff from Door Deck or Lose a level. Voodoo Doll is an item. This card makes all other players be affected by a curse that was just played when you discard Voodoo doll. As for the play that happened; What Is This?! (Curse) was played upon a player, and other players were given a moment to react to the play, which none chose to do. The player who had just played What Is This?! (Curse) then used/discarded Voodoo Doll (item currently equipped in play) to activate its effect as stated on the card. end. We seek clarification/opinions of the above interaction resulting actions. Miscellaneous: as a side note, this sequence was done outside of combat, if that mattered, which I don't believe it does. Additionally, we played as if the 'ALL other players' text excluded the User of Voodoo Doll from the Curse. We collectively decided that it fit the "intent" of the use of the word "other" rather than simply saying 'the Curse affects ALL players.' The ALL being emphasized may also have been to clue us in that the curse does indeed hit the Player who used Voodoo Doll. *awkward shrug*. There was also a lot of argument on the use of Affect vs Effect, and how that mattered. Fun times. English is a wonderful language. Thanks, Frost Text below is group opinions which were split between the 5 players, and can probably be ignored since the information above is hopefully enough to resolve this. The Conflict this is mostly showcasing interesting interpretations of this interaction. The interaction of this led to three separate opinions as follows: 1) Each affected player in clockwise order starting with original cursed target must reveal the top card of the Door Deck, then action the result of Monster=Bad Stuff+discard, or, Non-Monster=lose level + put card in hand. 2) Only the original cursed player reveals a single top card of the Door Deck, and then the affected 'ALL other players' suffer Monster=Bad Stuff, or, Non-Monster=lose level depending on the card revealed. Since only 1 card is being revealed, this would result in only the original curse target to keep a card if it was a non-monster and the other players get no cards to put into their hand but would still lose a level. 3) Similar to 1) but all players share the Bad Stuff or Lose a Level from all the cards revealed. This would mean if 4 non-monsters were revealed, each player would lose 4 levels. Last edited by Frost Foxes; 12-09-2022 at 05:21 AM. Fun times!
This is a perfectly cruel combo. Voodoo Doll does make the curse hit everyone but the person who played it. With that in mind, scenario 1 is correct.
