Default Slay A Minion & Aegis (Munchkin Bites!)

We had this come up at the table this evening:

An opposing player plays "Slay A Minion" to slay my Minion and gain a level. I have a few powers on the table at the time, but I quickly discard enough that I am able to play "Aegis" in order to protect my Minion. My opponent says that since Aegis wasn't already on the table, it won't protect the Minion and he dies. I let her have this one, but I still think otherwise. Who is correct?

Munchkin doesn't have a "stack." If you didn't have Aegis on the table when she played Slay A Minion, you can't use it to protect a Minion.

Does this mean that if I already had Aegis on the table, it would indeed protect my Minion from a Slay A Minion card?

I'm bringing this back up because Slay A Minion states that the minion is "discarded", whereas Aegis protects your Minions from being "killed".

Are we to presume that "killed" and "discarded" are synonymous in this context? Thanks!

I would love to have this confirmed as well. The wording causes confusion. Does Aegis protect a Minion from an opponent playing Slay a Minion??

Yes. That's one reason it's worded the way it is.
