Default Ogre Playmat M3?

There's been a little bit of discusion in the Ogrezine 2 KS comments about some possibilities for M3. Discussing thoughts here will be easier to find in the future.

For something new, and something different, my first thought is a big river delta. Buried back in the What Do You Want thread, I had proposed something with lots of littoral landing possibilities and a setting for bringing in a local defense force. Drew had put forth a Nova Brazilia option.

Drew, whatever you have stewing on the back burner, I hope that might lead to a river delta map too for new tactical challenges!

That's definitely on my "short list" although I'll concede as I've poked around with some designs, I've noticed an issue that makes that concept more limited in scope. Specifically, Ogres are almost useless for those type of maps, as they can just cruise up underwater to near their target almost unhindered.

Obviously, there are Marines and Howitzers, etc., but the challenge to use Ogres on such a map is still valid. Additionally, non-GEVs are also seriously hampered on maps with extensive water. Drop a bridge and the non-GEV unit is stranded.

So yes, I've got some designs that on the surface look enticing, but scenario design for them is exceptionally limiting. What are everyone's thoughts on these concerns?

All of which makes me think that it would be interesting to do an operational-level Ogreverse game that highlights the difference between the units that are strongest along the coasts vs. those that have more throw weight for inland control.

I've got some notes, boss!

Let me get some of these other projects to bed, and then perhaps we can talk . . . !

I can't speak for the Amazon delta, but the Mississippi Delta has enough swamp to discourage Ogres from coming near it.

Actually, that might also call for a scenario specific rule: Soft River Bottom - Ogres in River hexes must roll to see if they get stuck.

Yes boggy bottom scenario rules would be an Ogre deterrent, as would swamps that limit landing zones.

Armored Patrol Boats would be a great vehicle to introduce. Good old fashioned torpedoes and depth charges would be mighty handy against underwater Ogres.

I already have a couple of the Russian Armored Patrol Boats from Zvezda on hand waiting to be built for for naval operations. I believe Desert Scribe has some photos of them in action.

Generally, I see a river delta area as fertile ground for primarily archaic local defense forces holding the super powers at bay. Mekong Delta anyone?

The 4 HWZ defense is very solid. An underwater ogre couldn't beat it. Put some choke points in the estuaries for the marines to use. GEVs are fun to drive, and the latest version of the GEV-PC rules are workable.

"Don't bring a knife to a gun fight." Of current rules, GEVs and marines rule the water and that's OK.

Um... Also... M1 has that river slicing the map in half...

I think a playmat of a river delta would be a great start to explore what rules work for a wet expansion to the game.

And we have a peninsula mat showing now as a stretch goal.

And looks like it matches the end of Mat 1!

A full delta would still be fun sometime in the future. And could match along the watery long edge of the peninsula for more scenario options.

It's a good thing it's my birthday this weekend. Gives me a fighting chance to justify this map madness
