Former ADQ Editor Charles A. Oines is currently a Production Artist for computer games and lives near me in Redmond, WA. I have not met Charles, however.

Mean Streets author W.G. Armintrout operates The Miniatures Page (TMP), a valuable Web site for tabletop gaming with highly-recommended discussion forums. A few years ago, a Post-Apocalyptic Discussion Message Board was created on TMP. This message board forum regularly discusses Car Wars, Gaslands, and other car combat games.

Todd MacDermid, former President of the former AADA Chapter GHOST, works in the IT industry and lives in Seattle, WA. I have not met Todd in person, but we have exchanged several e-mails.


James Barton, Ph.D., former editor of High Velocity Duelling (HVD) and the Car Wars Mailing List (CWML), earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics in the U.S. and returned to Australia. Dr. Barton works in IT and security, and plays miniature wargames.

The anarchy debate between Charles Oines and Leslie Fish in the back pages of ADQ was a delightfully formative introduction to flaming and trolling in my junior high days. I will be forever grateful to ADQ and Steve Jackson Games as a result.

Happened all the time in APAs back in the early 20th century -- one of the more-famous participants was one Howard Phillips Lovecraft.... :)

The difference these days, of course, is: The flamewars happen *much* faster; and Craig Ferguson's "Three Questions" routine becomes much more understandable.

That level of bile maintained for that level of time must be indicative of some serious personality issues. Surely by the end of the "probably hand-written" letter you must have had a chance to calm down.

Another odd thing is that back in the day, you had to pay to send the venting of your spleen (rather than it be a minute fraction of your monthly mobile phone contract or something).

I wonder if that investment of time and personal wealth somehow gave it the gilding of a votive offering or sacrifice in the writers head and thus somehow uplifted the unworthy content to something higher.

I do feel that the passing of duels of honour greatly diminished manners. If you called someone a liar you might be called to defend that accusation with your life, it would either curb your bile or hopefully remove you from the gene pool. If someone was willing to defend their opinion with their life, you might be inclined to respect them even though you disagreed and the duel need not actually occur.

Now we can hide behind aliases (or the postal service wrt. to the topic under discussion) there is no disadvantage (or even censure) if you have no personal honour. This is a shame.

Fortunately we have Car Wars so we can at least roleplay in a world where duelling still exists.

Scott Haring is a name I remember, along with my favorite car wars artist George "Speed" Webber. His cars were inspiring.
