I do like the "magical underground ecosystem" conceit, because it gives excuses for gigantic cavern systems crowded with freakish giant glowing mushroom trees dripping with iridescent spanish-moss-oid stuff and the ground-level "plant life" being fungoid and lichen growths that begin to resemble corals, with the occasional sicky but perfectly mundane viney brambly thing trying to survive purely on everything elses phosphorescence.

Because it's cool looking, and because it tends to throw the party's Survival specialties out the window :)

I loved Blackreach in Skyrim :)

A Japanese light novel/manga/anime with a really long name (Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru no Darō ka?) postulates that the Dungeon (there's only one) is itself a living thing, and spawns monsters as part of its internal processes.

The D&D Companion Set posited that magic-users who built dungeons beneath their towers automatically attracted monsters with treasure to live in them. Then the magic-user could send some lackeys down into the dungeon once in a while and clear it, returning with the loot.

But how does the loot get down there? It's not like it's magically conjured the moment the monster is killed...

... on second thought, that just might be the truth for a Dungeon Fantasy reality.

Particularly for the CRPG inspirations such as the roguelikes and Diablo.

The monsters bring it with them.

Monsters and treasure cannot be created or destroyed, but may be converted into one another.

Or: conservation of the amount of stuff the GM has to keep track of.

Loot = Challenge Rating squared?

The number of giant rats I've killed in video games who appear to have eaten someone's jewelery and money-pouch is truly staggering. They all conveniently seem to split open and drop it on the ground when I kill them, too.

Although that one rat that had a Greatsword pop out of it was odd.

A friend killed an insect swarm in Diablo. It was carrying a full suit of plate armor. Strong insects.
