Default Question Game: Post Agricultural Fantasy Setting.

We've played this before and gotten some good settings. I'd like to try the game again. Our goal is to make an interesting setting.

We get the best results when there is a theme to the setting. The theme (and goal) for this version is a post agricultural fantasy setting, where magic is used to solve all the world's problems. The magic system is intentionally left unspecified, but this is gurps: we can match any setting to the right magic system.

This isn't about predicting what will happen if everyone has magic as it is about creating a setting where everyone does, and that hangs together.

Rules:
  • Answers should be limited to the question, though they may expand upon details. The best questions prompt for details. If asked about the personality of the head of state, mentioning the crown Prince, queen mother, and despicable minister is appropriate. Detailing the ministers evil plans is not.
  • Questions should not assume any new information, and answers should feel free to contradict any limits imposed. If asked "what fantastic creatures exist? " without the creatures being mentioned previously, a valid (and appropriate answer) is " no new creatures exist, but gorillas have mythological status : they are not believed to exist, but appear frequently in stories. "
  • You must answer the last question and post your question in the same post. Please don't answer quickly with just an answer and then edit a question in.
  • Be courteous and have fun.

The first question:

How does the society feed itself? Mages conjuring food? Modern level crop yields from agricultural magic or magical wonder crops? Magic items that conjure food? spells and artifacts that make eating unnecessary?

Food mysteriously appears on any properly prepared table three times per day. The meal is always nutritious, and has some variety in the menus, but is otherwise scaled to the social class of the table settings. Nobody really knows why.

Second question:
How long has this been happening? How did it start?

A2) It started a five hundred years ago during a great blight that wiped out all the grains. All the mages of the land failed reverse the blight. The new food supply arose when The Golden Emperor traded his empire and his soul to fairies in order to end the famine.

Q3) How are agricultural needs (i.e. cotton, flax, tobaco, etc.) aside from food supplied?

Most such things are magically created in magical factories as part of completed goods instead of raw materials.

Question: How is transportation handled?

Umm... I don't know that this a) actually answers the question b) stays within the bounds of of the question. You've made several broad sweeping statements about how magic in this world works and how the economy works. If you want to say "Conjured in magical factories as part of completed goods", that's fine.

just trying to keep this fun for everyone. Please edit your answer.

Sure. That is what I was trying to say but I went apparently too far in describing it.. :)

Permanent gate effects link areas with large amounts of traffic, and Loads and cargos and passengers pass through the gates. This only works for large distances and permanent destinations though. A later question can decide what the things going through the gates look like.

Why was a single soul enough to bring this never-ending stream of food?

Ancestor worship is practiced in this environment. What the emperor didn't realize is that sacrificing his soul also put the souls of his ancestors all the way back to the beginning in the same peril!

What is being done with said souls?

The Emporer was a Living God, so his soul was really awesome

How many hours a week do people work?

They are made to rule in fairyland.

Why the appearance of food still considered miraculous when finished goods are routinely magically created?
